The only reason I upgraded to an A64 is because it was damn near free - the mobo was free, I just paid for a bottom-end CPU.

1.6a@2.133, GF4 Ti4600..not overkill anymore, but the overclocked 1.6 wasn't too bad 3 1/2 years ago 😛

Nope, I upgrade my computer piecemeal as I need a new feature.

What I've got in it now gets the job done.

Now when I get my dvcam for christmas I am buying myself, I'll probably make a switch to an Intel Pentium since it does vid encoding better than Athlons from what I have read.

I just brought a amd 64 mobo
and planning on a 3000+ amd64 cpu this week
and an fresh 1.5gig of 3200ddr =) I CAN'T WAIT!

Athlon64 Venice
2 gig Corsair XMS PC3200
Windows XP 64bit
SB Audigy 2 ZS
Gigabyte Nforce 3 Ultra 939
XFX Geforce 6800GT

I play Everquest 2, this system barely runs it on balanced (the medium setting, about 4 options below the highest)

it would be overkill if all I did was surf the web and write email but as a gamer I use all my resources. Now, I don't game 24/7 and I don't run any of those distributed computing programs so while not at my machine gaming I am wasting compute cycles. If only I could pay a little less and get a computer that scaled it's speed to my needs. I could "rent" the additional speed while gaming but rent out any extra when just surfing... that would be cool...

It is top notch right now, but I'm starting to get the urge to
upgrade "just because" I want it even faster.
Too broke right now though 🙁

Yes.

A64 X2 @ 2.7GHz
1GB TCCD @ DDR540
X850 XT PE

And most of the time it's surfing the web. I do run UD on it so it's not a complete waste.

Yeah, I think so. I have my moments, though, when I do work with sound and video editing and of course the occasional gaming, but honestly, I could live and get by with A LOT less on my desk and a LOT more in my wallet.

On the other hand, at least this system will last me a long time. I plopped down $1600 for a *COMPLETE* system and I think it'll get me through the 3 years left I have in college; CPU-wise and gaming-wise.

Nope.

P4 2.4GHz @ 2.699
1.5Gb of ram
820Gb HD (lots of DV videos 20mins @ 15Gb!)
GF4 Ti4200 128Mb (fan doesn't spin anymore😛)
DVDRW

The only overkill thing is the monitor. 23" Sony LCD that I bought for £2100 2 and a half years ago. It got a lot of use before I got my job and during Uni when I was coding and on project work.

Koing

Amd 2.0+ (1.67Gh)
512 memory
ati aiw7500
4xdvdrw
19" crt

It suits me just fine right now. I would like to upgrade, but i will wait for the prices to drop some more.

Nope. Dual 2.66GHz Xeon, 2TB disk space, Quadro FX 1100 video card, and I'm spending days solid doing rendering and plenty of time moving other projects onto external hard drives to make room for what I'm working on now. It's definitely been one of those times when I could use a faster machine, but I think I'll wait for the prices on the dual-core chips to come down before I replace this one.
