Woudnt say its overkill, I have no top of the line stuff....Only thing i would say is overkill is the fatal1ty motherboard because its expensive, but i truely enjoy the features.
Abit A8N-SLi Fatal1ty Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (ClawHammer)
Thermaltake Armor Aluminum case
Memorex DVD DL Multiformat Burner (Used Often)
4x512 Corsair XMS Low Latency PC-3200 2-2-2-5 RAM
Onboard Sound (I dont find much use out of it)
Dell 2001FP
1x74gb Raptor
1x160GB Maxtor
1x250GB Western Digital
2x6800GT's in SLi mode

I use most of my features, but it isnt necessarly all required.

I built a custom rig with a $500 X800XT PE card then the baby came. Since then I've probably played games 2 hours in the past 4 months!

hopefully, I will have a new system built comprised of parts from our very own FS/FT. The components:

A64 3200+ 939 - venice (courtesy of redDragon128)
Gigabyte K8NS ultra (courtesy of JonMooring)
40GB Maxtor 7200rpm IDE
1GB PC3200 (still looking on FS/FT)
GeforceFX 5200

I've tried to spend my money mostly on the interfaces that make using it more enjoyable, i.e., good wireless keyboard and mouse, nice large lcd monitor, comfortable chair. Also, I've tried to make things quiet/ silent, by using certain heatsinks, fan speed controllers, & laptop drives instead of 3.5 inch drives, etc. The chip and motherboard themselves aren't too special, on one rig an old pentium 4 mobile chip (1.8 ghz) and on another rig a celeron D 2.4 ghz.

No, I haven't upgraded my rig (performance-wise) since last April and I don't feel that I should have.
A 2.8C, 1GB DDR400 and an FX5900 are enough for all games in 1152x864 without AA and AF. AFAIK, no games coming out this year will require a better rig.
Besides, the only game I've bought this year was GTA:SA. The next one will be Worms: Mayhem, and there's no need to upgrade to play that.

Yes, my memory and this damn custom water cooler set me back ($250 and $500 respectively). I am however have been working on a setup that would hook up the video card to my water cooling system (well its dry ice) so I can OC the video card well over the ultra extreme speeds

wow!

dry ice cooler...lol, that's pretty hardcore.

Mine was overkill 2 years ago, but now is just a decent average PC.

I've only upgraded he video card since then just to make HL2 and Doom3 play more enjoyable, though that wasn't even really needed.

This is good advice, I probably will do this as well 🙂

Nah. My system is well stressed. My gaming one at least.
The rest of the computers in my house have a combined GFLOP/s more than the government here.

Nope, its part of this well-balanced nerd experience

Mobile Athlon XP 2600+ at like........crap I forgot, 2.2 GHz I think
1 GB of OCZ PC3200 (at 2-2-2, <quagmire>aaaalright</quagmire>)
Pioneer DVR-108
some combo drive
2x120 GB drives
and a GeForce 6800 GT
oh yeah, and the heavenly Samsung 193P, great monitor

other peripherals
speakers:logitech z-5500
kb & mouse:some logitech USB kb, logitech mx1000
viewsonic n5 * -> VGA converter

i play games and i appreciate high quality while im playing so i use the graphics card to its potential, my CPU strains on the physics sometimes when playing games.....likewise my memory sometimes runs short, specially when i game with TS open plus MSN and web browsers for clan sites....heh
Oh and the soundcard is heavily abused as i have a nice collection of DVD-Audio discs that use the 24bit 92khz properly....oh any my HDD has around 20GB currently left which is about what i like to keep spare in case i suddenly need to store something for a friend....

so i'd say not overkill, in fact currently it could do with an upgrade.......CPU could bump up to a 3.4 or 3.6 to be about right, double the RAM so im not left wanting with BF2, HDD is fine size wise, but wouldnt mind the Raptor for gaming, oh and damn am i gonna be happy when Creative release their new chip...heh....

Care to share? 🙂

Yes my computer is way overkill. I did just fine with a 2.0 Northwood, 512 mb of ram and MX420 before. Now that I got the x2 4200+ and Nvidia 6800GT, I do exactly the same things as I did with my old computer (surfing the web, typing on word, and playing guild wars, wow, wc3, and SC, and I don't feel a difference at all....

Ya, to the guy with the DVD burner that hasn't burned a single DVD, I can relate to you 🙁.
