Poll: Is your computer overkill?

Do you actually stress your computer to the max? Or does it sit at rest a majority of the time?

I feel like most of us on this board have an urge to always be upgrading, but I don't know that my computer ever really reaches it's full potential.

Haven't really upgraded in >1 yr, except for a vid card to play HL2 and D3. Current setup has more oomph than my needs. I don't care if encoding takes a few extra seconds.

I am pretty sure I have more processing power in my house than most small countries.. And I dont do much with it.

Nah... pretty modest computer. I really don't use it for anything other than surfing the net and the occasional game of CS.

My Logitech Z-5500 speakers routinely piss off the neighbors, so I would say that's not overkill. Objective completed.

no I usually always buy the biggest bang for the buck. When I last needed to upgrade I went with:

Mobile 2400
ATI Radeon 9700 (picked it up dirt cheap from New egg referb)
and 512mb of memory.

a year later I'm still most than fast enough (chip clocked to 2.4) needed to toss more ram in but besides that i'm confident i'll be able to hold out till the dual core athlons dip to 180-220 range

if I had do an upgrade right now I would prolly do:

Athlon 64 3000 socket 939
Geforce 6800
2x1gb

not as hot of a deal as my previous setup was at the time but I don't think thier are any cheap gems like the athlon mobiles currently

Yes, my memory and this damn custom water cooler set me back ($250 and $500 respectively). I am however have been working on a setup that would hook up the video card to my water cooling system (well its dry ice) so I can OC the video card well over the ultra extreme speeds

Athlon XP 1600/768MB/AIW 9800 Pro
So, no, I don't think so. I may actually be able to justify a faster processor and more RAM now that I'm recording more audio. Audio processing takes a bit of crunching. The HDD I store my digicam pics on is nearly full, so I have to do something about that as well.

it's overkill right now, but I probably won't be upgrading anything other than the video card (and adding drives) for another two years at least (just upgraded my mobo, cpu, and ram a few months ago)

edit: AMD64 3200 w/ 2 gigs of ram and a radeon 9600. planning on upgrading to a 9800 in the fall to get better WoW graphics.

currently sporting
P4 Celeron 2.45mhz
512mb pc2100
geforce 5600xt
benq 12x dvdrw
80gb 5400rpm

yeah it's pretty weak but i dont really play any games, except for cs, sc, emu, so it does its job.

Nope.

Currently use: 2.4 GHz P4, 384 MB DDR, GeForce 4 420 MX ($600 including monitor/shipping/tax bought 2.9 years ago). It barely plays the games I have.

On order: 3.0 GHz P4 (531), 512 MB DDR2, 256 MB X600 SE ($624 including monitor/shipping/tax). It'll arive next Monday. I went a bit short on memory, but when another 512 MB is <$50, I'll buy it. The video card is a tad weak, but I don't care about the highest settings on games and will be a step up from what I currently have.

specs here

I'm still running on a system from '01. No money to upgrade right now. I hope to get a new system by Christmas or the first of 2006.

GHz? whats that I'm still in the MHz range. 🙁

i'd say possibly yes, except for the fact that while it's in idle state 95% of the time, when i DO use it, i pretty much use up all the resources my addon peripherals and extra hardware is there for.

It's fine for general use but for games it's pretty weak.

I upgraded my video card to a 9800 pro over an radeon 8500, but i still don't play a lot of games. I do how ever use dual monitors with some video/dvd watching.

My Klipsch pro media 4.1 speakers are still kick a$$ as ever so, i don't worry about that too much.

But, for the time being, i think i'm not getting the most out of my pc. I have my ups and downs when it comes to really using my pc, let it be vmware or say installing a fps.

Mine is probably overkill for daily use, but I like to occationally capture vids and play with graphics software.
3200+, 1.5gig RAM, 400gig HD, Radeon 9800pro.... and alot of other stuff.....

I'm pretty sure that meets recommended requirements for all the games I've played so far this year.

Like what? Do you think I can play HL2 and BF2? I have been thinking about upgrading the ram and the video card in the near future.
