Poll: Is Healthcare a Right or a Privelage?

GasX

Lifer
My opinion is that it is a privelage.

I do believe that it is the duty of a forward thinking government to try and provide the best healthcare possible, but that does not make it a right.

edit: see bottom of page two for "The situation so far"

I too believe that it's a privilege. But I also believe that the government should subsidize for care to the people who cannot afford it. It's beneficial for all people if the population as a whole is healthy.

Everyone has a right to healthcare. Some people do need help in obtaining afforable healthcare, and assistance to help them provide for their families. However, people shouldn't live off the system and there should be appropriate and well thought out guidelines to help prevent this mishap. 🙂

I would have to say it would be better as a privilege, as when it is a right, people tend to take it for granted and abuse it, at least in some countries with socialized medicine. When people do not have to worry about the cost of it, they go to the doctor for every little scrape, bruise, etc., and overtax the system.

Priviledge. Calling it a right leads inevitably to hard choices because someone else has to pay for it.... if healthcare is a 'right', how do we justify telling someone we won't pay for the $10 million experimental operation because it costs too much?

I have no problem with the government helping people pay for private medical insurance, but not a socialized healthcare system a la Hillary.

So which is it Fettsbabe?

It's a right but people shouldn't live off the system... Isn't that a contradictory statement?

Someone explain to me WHY you have a right to quality basic healthcare. And If anyone mentions Hillary Clinton, I am gonna get Red Dawn to come after you.

If socialized medicine were a wonderful thing, we would not have people from Canada coming to the U.S. for treatment, due to the fact that their system is bogged down with people going to the doctors for every little problem.

<< wow, 14 posts and he's already jumping into the hot debates.

Go Steve Go!

I am just waiting for debates on gun control, welfare, politics, etc., to roll around. You will see me there. 😀

I believe Healthcare should be both a right and a privalege... just like education today... (only better of course)...

That is.. everyone gets some form of basic healthcare... of a solid quality. And if you have the money and so choose, you can buy better healthcare...

Subsidized healthcare if done correctly falls into this ideological mold quite well.

Noone in our great country should go without healthcare... and I'll dispute some arguments now..

Glenn1: Well maybe you should be the one to tell people that they can't have the $2,000 procedure done because they have no health care at all...

ShotgunSteve: The purpose of a healthcare system is not to discourage people from using it... Perhaps there will be some abuse but mostly I think people arent that excited about doctor visits... I myself have free healthcare paid for by my employer... but that doesnt mean I abuse it...

<< ShotgunSteve, you left out religion, MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! >>

Religion is covered by etc. 😀 As is everything else. I just did not want to get in too deep on my first day. 😉

"Everyone has the same right to pay for it that I do."

And if you can't pay for it?... you die?

doctors traditionally take some typew of hypocritcal oath stating they will help who ever needs assistance (or something like that). If your cruel and hateful I guess you would consider healthcare a privelage. Just because someone maybe was born mentally retarded and cannot find a good job with health insurance, I guess if they get cancer or some other illness they are SOL.

Ut oh... are you another conservative to engage in heated debate with my liberal self?... I sure hope so!🙂 Life without Conservatives = no fun debates...

I just came back from a meeting, and one of the topics/concerns is the increasing cost of healthcare premiums on the bottom line of coorporate america.

Something the speaker mentioned was that compaines will soon be forced to just give an employee "X" amount of dollars for their own health coverage. If this amount is enough, fine, if its not who gives a sh*t.

I never said it was. Paying insurance on a car is not meant to discourage anyone from driving either. I was just citing the Canada example, as that is the one that hits closest to home. As with many issues, there is not a strictly black and white answer.

Yes, you hit the nail on the head. I am cruel and hateful. :disgust:

Instead of pulling on the heart strings, explain why someone HAS A RIGHT to basic healthcare, as opposed to why not having healthcare is such a tragedy that it must be a right...

I'm sorry maybe I'm misunderstanding... but it sounds like you're saying that if corporations don't provide enough money for healthcare coverage... thats too damn bad... they shoulda had a better job, and now they should just rot and die on the street.... please tell me I misread that?

No, you get Medicare or better yet, make payments.

Fair enough.... lets take this approach assuming free healthcare... how could we discourage the canada situation without depriving people of NEEDED healthcare? what are your ideas... I'll try and think of some myself...
