Compared to Doom 3 , HL1, HL2, COD, Farcry. Do you think that Halo is the best game ever?

Halo is a great game, though not the greatest. I must say I enjoy the plot and the character more than any of the other games you mentioned. Doom lacks in game-play and plot as well as character development. It is a good game, not even great.

Both the Half Life games are great games. HL2 is gorgeous, and probably one of the best looking games ever made. Game-play is great but the plot is so-so, and strangely enough character development of every character but Freeman is done really well. Unfortunately, both Halo 2 and HL2 ended rather abruptly. I say we continue this argument when the third installment of Halo comes out next spring and Half Life Aftermath comes out this summer.

Halo: Combat Evolved is the best First-Person-Shooter game to have ever appeared on any Consoles to date.

It is not the "best game ever", but it IS the best of its genre, on any Consoles, not including PC.

And Halo 2 is simply way better than Halo: Combat Evolved. In my opinion.

On PC ... it's a whole different story.

Single player, HL2 and Far Cry are more fun.

Multiplayer, Halo trumps them because nothing beats laughing at your friends after you smoke them.

Out of the games you listed, Doom 3 is the most overrated game ever. Its the most repetitive darkest lamest FPS in a long time. Maybe in Doom 1 times, linear-shooting was fun....but not in 21st century.

We have enough crap in the Video forum already.

It was a good game, but hardly the "best game ever". Hats off to Bungie for making the controls not totally suck for a console shooter, despite being crippled by the XBox controller. Graphics were decent, but have not aged real well. The plot was OK (albeit full of recycled sci-fi ideas, and you could definitely see where they were going about halfway through the game). Driving the vehicles around and running over enemies is fun. Cooperative mode is fun (but way too easy, since you essentially have infinite lives if you play carefully). I really like the way they implemented grenades and melee attacks into the combat system.

Downsides: Gameplay gets very repetitive (run into new area, flush out bad guys and kill them, move on to next area). Maps are extremely repetitive, and somewhat bland. There's little replay value in the singleplayer. Multiplayer is fun for a while, but the limited number of maps is a drawback, and there's not much to it other than deathmatch and very basic CTF. Not letting you drive the alien tank or wield the plasma sword/launcher are things that seem obviously left out (as if the game was rushed for the console launch). Weapon balance seems very odd (for some reason, 24th-century combat armor and energy shields are useless against shotguns, but stop assault rifle fire like it's nothing? And the pistol does more damage than an assault rifle?)

Halo2 improved things on a number of fronts, but in evolutionary ways (somewhat better graphics, more and better multiplayer maps, XBox Live support, better weapon balance).

I felt that it was a fairly mediocre FPS, but cut it some slack because it was a console game. Sure, Halo was ground breaking on some of the early outdoor levels, but the repetativeness of the later levels was painful. It was like fighting in the same room for hours on end. Regrettably Halo2 was similar, but they added that really stupid, hard to follow, storyline that ended abruptly.

QFT

Xbox has pretty much NO good games unlike PS2.

So when a DECENT game like halo comes out, people go crazy.

EDIT: Half Life 1 was the best game ever for me.

The greatest FPS ever produced is the original Unreal Tournament (1999). (Yes, the original is widely regarded as being far superior to the attrocious UT 2003 and the merely tolerable UT 2004.) The game played well online and it was open to modders who created many different game types and also mappers who created, literally, thousands of custom maps. Unreal Tournament capture the flag online is by far one of the greatest FPS games ever created.

If you're open to playing an older game that lacks modern day eyecandy but that still has good graphics and exceptional game play, find a copy of the Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition, learn how to play it, and get online. The game doesn't have much copy protection or keys, so you can easily buy one off of eBay for a couple bucks.

I have to agree - on the whole Halo was boring, repetitive and bland. The indoor levels especially sucked.

The game's only redeeming feature was the vehicles and the outdoor environments which looked very good, but really I'd much rather be playing the likes of Far Cry or Chrome for that sort of thing.

I think it was an exceptional game but the likes of the Half Life Series, the Doom Series, Quake, Unreal definitely top it (in the FPS category).
