I had lots of problems with an asus geforce2 32mx with a via chipset(athlon 800). I upgraded to a 9700pro, with a p 2.4c and things are much better. 😀

This poll sucks... its gonna be chipset limitations and problems that most of these people are going to have, or issues with not uninstalling drivers properly. Both ATi and NVIDIA are very reliable compatibliity wise with the exception of dirt cheap or ancient motherboards.

Yeah, because then there is no bounds or evidence (as there is little to prove anyway) to show any such instability, in any case.

I have had a TNT2, GeForce DDR, GeForce 3 ti 200, ATI 9500Pro, ATI 9700 Pro, and a 5700Ultra. Both ATI cards failed for differing reasons. The 9700Pro only came up with black and white - even at boot time so it wasn't a drive issue. The 9500 Pro caused my PC to only warm boot - it wouldn't cold boot. I have had no problems with the Nvidia cards at all. I am lured to the performance of the ATI products, but the bad experiences keep me very tentative about them.

Since the ATI 8500pro, I have had issues with both software & hardware with ATI. I have not had issues with Nvidia cards, I have 9700 pro, 9800 pro, 9800XT, 9600 pro, 9500, 9000, 9200. 8500 (all ATI built by), FX5950, FX5700 ultra, FX5200, TI4800, TI4600, TI4400.

I use almost all Intel mainboards, Asus for AMD64 & AMD XP, I hate having to find just the right things to turn off or on in bios or software etc... I want my cards to work without any of that as the nvidia cards have (except fx5600), I never over clock nor even care too, I am in the PC industry and update always to the latest and greatest (on my top 3 systems), keeping 1 or 2 steps down on my lower 3 systems.

In many cases a issue gets fixed with new cat drivers, and I find another. When I pay $400 to $600 for the latest & greatest card, the last thing on my mind is turning off (or on, just to make work) any features period...

Myself, I don't like Nvidia, however there cards work for me, in my perfect world someone like matrox or 3dlabs would come out with a card that is fast enough to run all currect games with high details on, I think both Nvidia & ATI then would have better products at better prices...

My favorite card right now is the Leadtek fx5950 pro, its VERY quiet, looks cool, fast, works great on my AMD 64 system! The cooling system on these cards just doesn't get enough good press...

I've used both vendors and I've had issues with both. However overall I class both vendors' drivers as excellent so I voted for the last option.

You would be regarding that ATI has issues on some motherboards. Incompatibility usually takes more than one party, not to be a smart ass.

I have had (in nvida order) tnt, geforce ddr, geforce 2, geforce 2 ultra, geforce 2 mxddr (died through o/c), geforce 4 ti4200 x 3, geforce 2 mx400pci, geforce 4 mx440 pci&agp, geforce 3 ti500, geforce fx5200 and probably another 1 or 2 I cant remember.
ATI cards = rage pro, radeon 9000pci, 9600pro and my current aiw 9800SE@pro.
Others include hercules 4500 kyroII and PowerVR 32mb kyro II

Of these the troubles with geforce card existed only due to bad PSU's (early geforce DDR was so power hungry and my current rig strains with much more than an mx 400 in it as my PSU is down to 350watt)

Kyro II problem nil, it was just dog slow.

ATI problem = Sh!t loads, 9600pro was a Pain to install and had problems with texture corruption in games in 75% of the games I played. 9800se AIW was just as much a pain, lots of problems with the AIW software and hardware. Remote works upto about 2 foot away and no more, opengl games wouldnt work etc..

What make me laugh the most is that people blame the user (usually ati fanboys) but think about it, most people who post on this forum are not your normal joe, they are usually pretty well informed. And if these people have problems what about mr average?

Some people would say you shouldnt expect computer hardware to work all of the time, I disgree. If a massive company like ATI (or Nvidia) doesnt have the Q&A department testing facilities capable of discovering these issue then that product does not deserve the title of 'fit for purpose' i.e the definition of quality.

386sx w/onboard - lousey no matter what.

486 w/Stealth Virge3D - better, but not great again.

PIII 450 (BX)w/Voodoo 3000 - loved it, no probs, but finally had to move on. Is still in an old machine around here somewhere.

1700+ (266a)w/ the Voodoo, Gforce2 MX - no probs.

2400+ (266a)w/9800NP - no probs or issues.

MY son's comps:

Cyrix 233 w/ S3 Nitro 3D - long time ago...

K6-3 400 w/Creative Stealth III = piece of crap - ran in DOS OK, but couldn't get it to run at all in Windows.
w/ Voodoo 2000 - ran without a hitch.

Athlon 1333 (133a) - Gforce2 MX -no probs

2400+ (NF2) w/9700NP - only one issue. Will not run Deus X Invis-War w/3.9 or 3.10 drivers. Runs fine with his original 3.4s. That's the only miscue.

My problems where, after being in office or in a game for awhile my system hard locked (had to disconnect power), this was on a Intel 845GBVL mainboard & on a A7V Deluxe, it works on a Supermicro Mainboard (72xx) just fine, that's where it will stay until I replace the system.

Of course it must of been a issue with a MB (the fx5700 & fx5950 both work in the same systems fine that the fx5600 did not), however like I said in my first post, no matter WHO makes the chips, the card should work in mainstream systems without issues or extra settings etc... These 2 MB's are/where very mainstream.

In the end I can except 1 bad egg from Nvidia, the speed of ATI lures me, but the issues of ATI the I already have had and see of others keeps me away.

Ive had Rage Pro's, a few older all in wonders, a 7500r and now a 9800.

I've had a GF2, ti4200 and just prior to the 9800 an FX5900.

In the latest (9800 vs 5900) I think even if the 9800 gave me problems it would be because the ATI is actually giving me an effort in bringing me a detailed colorfull game experiance. The FX might have had one or two less issues but the rendering it produces looks as though it was never trying as hard as the ATI to give me those pretty colors and sharp detail.

I would have to say that the fx cards from nvidia were very poor when they shipped. With some major driver problems that made it through. I know first hand that the 52.16 and the 52.70's that evga was pushing wouldn't let you do several things. Things like play a dvd that had macromedia encrytion, it would error out. The most irritating one was when I ran office xp and it would go into power saving mode when I was typing.

One of the sandbag walls in the COD demo isn't show the textures correctly. They flicker and sometimes completely aren't there, depending on which demo you play. Could that be the FX or the demo?

Fun topic. My cards:

4MB S3 Virge-Utter joke in 2D and 3D
4MB Voodo 1
16MB TNT 1 (both an AGP and PCI version)-kick-ass card for it's day
32MB Geforce 2MX-on my PowerMac.
64MB Geforce 2-Hercules-the cooling fan on this seems to be dying, as it's too loud.
128MB Geforce 4 4200 (8x version with faster RAM)-by Asus. Still a nice card, although FarCry kills it on high settings

I've only had three problems with Nvidia drivers.
1) when I first got my TNT 1 back when they originally came out (August '97, '98?) the drivers were unstable, but they were great within a month or two.
2) on both the Geforce 2 and 4 under Windows XP System Shock 2 is basically unplayable-any time you use psy powers or anything "flashes" the screen, the colors get completly out of whack. Don't know if that's technically an issue with the drivers, or something with XP (System Shock ran at like 10% speed until service pack 1).
3) Shogo dosen't display menus in Direct 3D mode under XP with both the Geforce 2 and 4, making it basically unplayable.

EDIT: Whoops, add a fourth. Just tried the Farcry demo, and there's some weird flickering in a few places.

ATi drivers were pathetic the last time I tried an ATi card, but that was years ago. For my next system, I'm still debating a Geforce 5900 versus a Radeon 9800 Pro. Obviously the Radeon has MUCH better performance, but I'm not 100% comfortable with the driver situation. Plus ATi seems to cheat with their alpha channel stuff (not that it's a big deal, but mmmm, shiny lightsabers 🙂 ).
