You're on a straight interstate highway. Let's call it I-84. The posted limit is 55mph and the time is 3AM on Wednesday night. How fast do you typically drive in these conditions?

I go 65mph if there is nobody around me, but if there are plenty of cars going faster, I go 70-75mph and I drive by the Sandwich Rule®.
I'm sure it is not proven, but I personally feel that it will be the one at the very front or the very back that is going to get stopped first if there is a police around.

What is sandwich rule?:

(vehicle behind me) < two to five car spaces> (me) < two to five car spaces> (car in front of me).

At 3AM, the so-called Sandwich rule would be the only condition I would speed. You know the cop's not gonna have his lights on, so at that time of night you're just one big well-lit target. Speeding at night is much more risky than speeding in the daylight

If it were dry, hadn't rained in a few days, and I was alone in the car, I would be driving triple digits. If I had company, it would depend on my company.

it's 3am.... if i see no lights in front or behind me, then i'm going to go around 85 or more... if i see other cars, i slow down until i can tell whether they're cops or not...

If I were about to sell my really old car, probably 100+ (adds to the resale value) ;)

Normally around 60 though - although cops can see you better at night, I feel more confident argueing that he accidentally did not target me, but the car right next to me.
Dunno if that would work.

In Virginia, I know most of them tolerate 7mph+ at night. From experience.

Yes, but they stay away from the highway.

You must have smart deer in Oregon. Most of the deer in the midwest are suicidal :frown:

And to think people say the same thing about Route 80.

I've seen one too many accidents to believe that.

Depends what the car is and at what speed it feels stable

...but at least 70, since that the speed limit where I come from :p

I would go 90MPH....I usually go about 70-75 depending on the traffic...if there is heavier than normal traffic then I will actually drive at the rate of traffic

See, that's the thing. Deer and elk get a little ways away from the highway and attack cars outright. Just ask Viper GTS. :p Three 1,000+ lb elk battered his car to sh!t on a back country road on his way with his brother to pick me up for the movies. Jumped straight out from the side of the road. One broadsided the passenger door, one hit the front passenger quarter panel, fliped over the hood/windshield and left marks on the driver door from the legs swinging around and the hooves slamming into it, and the other clipped the back passenger quarter panel.

...and his car smelled like Elk. :disgust:

I was going to go with in steps of five, but wanted a more finely divided scale, so I went with half of five, which is 2.5.

60-70, 70-80?

Not quite, because many people opt to go right at sixty when some opt to go right at seventy. Such scale lacks resolution for this particluar survey.

Thank You :D

I see there are at least 4 heroes around here who would do 100+mph.

Just curious, what kind of car do you drive 100+mph safely?

85mph, same as I always drive on the freeway, and same as everyone else in northern California drives on the freeway.

I don't understand the people saying that, since it's night, they'd drive like a bat out of hell. At night I'm more careful about speeding because the distance you can see is cut way down and it's much easier for a cop to sneak up on you. During the daytime anything up to 90 is fair game.
