If you are drawn into a fight over verbal insults, you've already lost.
Now, if a friend was attacked physically, I would not hesitate to jump in, no matter how big his attackers were.
I agree to a certain extent, but it depends on what's being said.
In this case, a couple punks called his GF a "bitch."
All that deserves is a roll of the eyes and walking away. (or if it was my GF, she'd say "you're damn right I'm a bitch... and proud of it!) To get into a fight over that is juvenile and silly.
Yea not over stuff like that. If some clown started mouthing off at me, even if he drops the n-bomb, in public I let it slide, to many witnesses, lol. But if someone started talking stuff to my wife or daughters, he immediately gets a 5 to 10 sentence. For the next 5 to 10 minutes I am going to do my best to whoop his @ss. And no I don't fight fair, I'll use anything I can that is at my disposal.

I voted yes. Like mentioned above - step in if he's outnumbered or outgunned, and only to break it up. If it's an otherwise equal mano y mano, stand back and stop it at the earliest opportunity. They give a mighty shove and fall apart, you bail your pal out.

It is not always right for you to step in, even if he is outnumbered. In this case, it seems a bigger guy is starting a fight with two people and expecting his little friend to step in. The problem is, the starter of the fight (the big guy) has a different sense of what he is capable of and is making decisions for the little friend. On top of that the little guy told his friend he wouldn't step in, which doesn't leave the OP getting his ass kicked but only having to accept the fact that his girlfriend was called a bitch.
Now if the big guy didn't start the fight over his girlfriend, that is a different story.

Once... hahaha!! this is really funny looking back on it now, all these years later.
About 7yrs ago... two guys flagged down myex b/f and me at about 4AM wanting us to help them with thier car. We politely said no, but we would make a phone call for them...and wanted to go on our way. As we tried to leave, one stood in front of the car and was slamming his fist into the hood while the other kicked the rear of the car... we jumped out...
As one of them was in my ex's face the other went to his car and got a baseball bat out... it was their plan, I think, to have one keep him occupied while the other got the bat and they were gonna gang up on him. When I saw this happening, I ran to the guy with the bat, and without thinking, I rushed him into the side of his car... grabbed the bat and started swinging at his legs and arms with it. After I hit him about three or four times, he started screaming like a girl for his friend to come and help him. That is when the other guy and my ex realized what was going on... and they ran over to us... the other guy jumped in the car and locked the door, and my b/f grabbed me and pulled me away.
They both sat in their car until we drove off. I was shaking like a leaf. My ex was like... WTF??? He had never seen that side of me and was surprised. Then he yelled at me about how I could have gotten hurt. But I did not think about that at the time. I just reacted.

By the time I got drunk enough to consider starting sh*t with a walking house, I'd be passed out.

I sort of agree with this, especially in fighting....you have better fighters than others at various levels.
Before I entered martial arts I was a decent fighter, I was a cocky honor student, about 175/180lbs at the time in decent shape at 5'10". I got in a few fights 2 on 1 usually with college guys as an underage bar patron
When I got into martial arts and only around blue belt I was regularly beating the basic black belts...those that just go to class and don't really care. There was a 3rd degree though that really no one could beat, he openly competed as well even overseas (full contact not point based)...those are the kinds of guys that are just different.
Fortunately most people think they are badasses due to watching XFC or whatever and especially when drunk easy to subdue.

I can agree, I suppose. At yellow-stripe (white, yellow, yellow-stripe, green, green-stripe, blue, blue-stripe, red, red-stripe, brown, brown-stripe, poomse, black), I was beating two specific 2nd-Dan students at once on full-contact Fight Night.
