Do you either get it from reading or hands-on/experience?

Me personnally about 80% from hands-on and the rest from reading.

The majority of it came from fvcking up my system & then having to fix it.

The rest I picked up by reading, talking, & generally keeping up with the hardware scene.

A mixture. During the 386 to Pentium classic days its mostly experimentation, with a little bit of reading crap magazines such as PC Magazine(I didn't know better than obviously) but ever since my Pentium 120, I've been reading up on Tom's Hardware, Anandtech and the like, as well as getting a CE degree :)

I'm with Viper - mostly by making mistakes & having to fix them (the hard way). :(

Same way as everyone else, screwing up really bad then having to fix it. Look around for answers on-line, and always learning new stuff while you are looking.

I'll tell you how I bloody well got my computer knowledge!

Necessity!

I got stiffed by the guys who sold me my PII233 system. I was faced with the task of building a new PC. That PII233 had to be fixed 3 times in the first year so I decided to sue the manufacturer and build my own from scratch without the flaky parts from that machine. So I pinched a copy of Scott Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs, Linux edition". I read all the bits that interested me and would help me put a computer together. And I am pleased to say I have fiddled lots and not broken anything yet.
I continue to read stuff on the internet, but mainly I have left magazines behind. They are behind the times, very limited and too beginner oriented. Also, I think guys on the net know more than many magazine writers. Like a reviewer did a whole review on a PC thinking it had an Athlon inside when it had a Duron instead. This was in a big magazine here. They only found out the next month. I mean, didn't he even fvcking look at the board inside? What kind of reviewer was THAT?

From several years of education and from more than ten years in the business of designing servers and workstations as well as desktops... And from these forums of course.. :)

The truth is, these forums gives me feedback on computer components and sometimes i make some PR statement, just because the guy needs the best of the best... ;-)

My first PC(not including Commodore64) was a 486-66 anyway I used to read computer mags & started installing simple things first like CD-ROMS,soundcard ,ram & over the years learned how to fixed the errors I made by myself,I still buy PC-format every month since you always learn about new things etc, now I`ve about 6 years worth of those mags in my bookcase.

:) .

I picked up a lot of my knowledge from reading at first. Along with reading I also had a lot of hands on experience from 286s to the present. Currently I am expanding my knowledge while I am at Purdue studying Telcommunications and Network Technology.

When Purdue beats IU today, we're going to Pasadena!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Woah, I guess Starlitt is lurker no more...

I started getting into computers during my sopomore year in high school which was around 4-5 years ago. Everything I know, I learned from my buddy "Bob." Basically, everytime I screwed up something on my computer and couldn't find the answer on the net or in magazines, I'd call him up for help. Anandtech and my buddy Bob are my sources and techsupport...

THANKS!!! I owe it all to you peeps!

I learnt a lot by fiddling around, building various PCs (my first being a 486 dx2).

I must say though, that I've learnt a hell of a lot since joining these forums as well :)
