hmmm not sure if I'm hearing the right thing. It doesn't sound really high pitched to me. On top of that, mp3's only go up to 16KHz or so, thus this file can't be any higher pitched than that. It's more accurate if you downloaded a tone generator, and inputted 17KHz or so.

Rats, I knew it would be too good to be true if I could still hear in the 17 kHz range.

it actually hurts my ears to listen to it...

Ya, I actually started to feel a wierd headache like sensation between my eyes right before it finished. 😛 It's a lot like the sound a tv makes when it's on but there's no signal (at least a CRT... don't have no fancy LCD/HD PLASMA WHATMACALLIT)... only worse. I always have to come out of my room and turn the tv off when people leave it on, because sometimes I can hear it from a ways away/through walls.

my 3 co-workers can as well, age 23 and age 33. I didnt even say anything and they were like WTF Is that awful noise

What's the frequency of the tone?

Realize that many speakers and other audio (especially computer stuff) tapers off severely in the high frequency range.

I need to check it out.

<---can hear a fly fart on the other side of the room

Far more accurate would be to ask people to take this test:

Text

Then you can visually see if your upper hearing range has degraded. And yes, you should be using quality headphones. Alot of people here are probably hearing the resonances at lower frequencies.

I couldn't hear it till I put the speaker right next to my ear but my wife asked me what it was and she is in the next room with the tv on...........

Yeah, I just let my mom listen to it and she could hear it perfectly. She's over 50 and has below average hearing.

I bought a Linksys router once that made a similar noise. Drove me crazy.

I was just going to post the same thing.

Also, when I scroll a webpage, my motherboard makes a noise like this, only higher pitched.
