we didn't have detention -- we had J.U.G. (judgment under god )

I got it 4 times that I can remember... once freshman year for being late to a class (I was given the option of running the gauntlet or taking the detention... I took the detention. lol), twice during senior year for dress code violations (once for an untucked shirt, once for being in the halls without my sports coat on), and a third time senior year for cutting class (but I got out of that one -- I cut gym 70% of the time my senior year... one fateful day, the entire rugby team decided to cut as well, so for the first time ever, the gym teacher took attendance. usually he took attendance for the first half of the room and then just gave up, never actually getting to the bottom of the list where my name was).

jug sucked. you were put in a classroom with a random quote from Bartlett's written on the blackboard and given 2 sheets of graph paper. you had to fill the both sheets with the quote -- both sides, one letter per box, no boxes skipped for any reason.

At my school we didn't have detention, we had OCS (On Campus Suspension).

I got it once is in 8th grade.

I went to a doctor appointment, and when I returned I forgot to check back in at the office. After leaving campus for any reason you MUST check back in at the office. I was given a day of OCS for failing to check in. It served in the morning for 1 hour before school starts. I knew the teacher that ran it, so it wasn't so bad to be in there fo 1 hour.

edit: how many of you got "the strap" or hit with any other random objects in school?

i got the strap 3 times. once for throwing snowballs, once for banging on the stage to the beat of Little Drummer Boy at the Christmas concert, and once for putting worms in other kids' boots.

Twice. One was a casual thing, the teacher's idea of detention was naming an exotic vacation destination and having people do a few math problems. That one was for giving someone the finger during class. The other was more recent, I hadn't shaved in a couple days.

All the time in grade 9 and 10. Apparently my morning teachers didn't care for me being late by 10-30 minutes daily... It barely made a difference cause I was regularly 40-50 minutes late in my morning grade 11 class.

...This irresponsible and ungrateful bastard gew up to be only late by a few minutes once or twice in his final semester of college.

No such things in my country that I went to school at.

You do something bad, you get a beaten from either your seniors or teachers with a cane on your butt till it swells or with the sharp edge of a ruler on your knuckles till your skin starts peeling off.

None of this "time-out", "stare at walls", "sleep" or "do homework" detention nonsense.

More then I can count.

On the last day of 7th grade, I threw a piece of candy across a little courtyard thing we had, hit a girl in the head. I didnt mean to, but I got busted for it. When I came back to the school for 8th grade, they already had detention lined up for me for that.

I've had to stay after for detention a few hundred times in the last 6 or 7 years. It really sucks too when I'd rather be doing something else.

edit: Thankfully I haven't had students like BoomerD was in my classroom the last 6 or 7 years :p I'd hate to be tied to my classroom like that.

In high school, I spent so much time in detention, it might as well have been my home room...We also had "study hall" where the fuck-ups had to go after school and I even managed to get in trouble there too.

Finally, many of my teachers quit sending me because it just didn't accomplish the desired result.

At least half a dozen times.

Some related to self-defense.

Yes, once.
For one grading period, the school implemented a plan where if you missed three homework assignments in a week, cumulative, for all classes, you got an automatic detention.
Yup, I missed three. So I spent the detention period finishing up some homework. The only "bad" part of it was having to get picked up by my mom - we lived about 10 miles from the school over lousy rural roads, so it's not like a quick 5 minute drive.

Oh well. Homework was usually busywork anyway, and I didn't do it for the "practice," but because it needed to be done for a grade. I usually got straight A's, so it wasn't a problem.

only once. This kid was chasing one of my friends down in 2nd or 3rd grade so from like 20 feet away I through a stick in their general direction and by sheer luck, the stick hit the kid and poked him in the eye. There was blood but luckily he wasn't blind. Man, that was an amazing throw.

Full suspension once.
1 week suspension twice.
3 day suspension about 10 times.
1 day iss (in school suspension, like all day detention) probably 30-50 times
After school detention (staying after class, 1 hour in the iss room, or anything else) too many to possibly count.

That's middle and high school combined.

Yes. Way back when I was in HS they made the students who were late sign in at the office and every three times you were late you automatically got detention. I was late a lot.

First one was in 4th grade. Never stopped getting them. First suspension was 8th grade (in school and out of school). HS I got lunch detentions (that I skipped), afterschools (because of skipping and other infractions), ISS (a whole bunch of reasons from "egging a student on to start a fight", to cards, to various other things), to OSS (for a whole bunch of reasons), and was threatened to be expelled twice (once for being accused of hacking the teachers laptop and changing grades, and another for saying something I didn't say but the sub didn't care).
