Half Life 2, IMO, tops Far Cry by only a little bit. Far Cry was first, and really gave me that "wow this is so cool" feeling. But HL2's levels were just insane. Best level design ever.

Doom 3, while fun, is a play-once kind of game. The shadows were cool, but the game play was fairly boring. These days, you need a great story for a great game. Good graphics wowed in the days of Doom, Quake and Quake 2, but they are no longer sufficient on their own.

I see a lot of farcry and hl2 comparison, and it seems like a lot of people simply liked both of them. I haven't played farcry yet because I was afraid my aging system wouldn't handle it from what I heard of it's performance, but maybe I'll get it for my new rig.

Doom3 multiplayer is barely worth mentioning.
HL2 DM is pretty basic, not unlike Doom3. CS:S is just fancy CS. Hopefully new maps will make this a more up-to-date experience.
Farcry is pretty basic as well, but I havnt speant much time with that one.
UT2k4 is easily the best online multiplayer FPS experience available. Many game modes, rich mod community, tons of servers to play on. Plus its the easiest on system requirements. For online FPS gaming UT2K4 can only be surpassed by Planetside (monthly subscription fee) or maybe Battlefield 1942/Vietnam, which also have a huge following and massive mod community.

Single player has much less replay value so thats not as big a factor for me. I'd go with HL2 on that.

Personally I thought the ending of HL2 was pretty weak. When you go into the tower and get into the pod, etc it looked pretty crappy compared with the stunning experience up to that point, in my view. The whole 'jumping on handy moving blocks' method that don't seem to actually do anything was not good at all and reaked of HL1 and other games of that era. Still the overall best game, though.

FarCry looked amazing and I believe it's the strongest when it comes to varying gameplay (different ways to achieve the same goal). HL2 beats it when it comes to water effects, although it could use the 'blood cloud' that forms in FC when someone's shot in water.

Doom 3 made the least use of the amazing engine that ol' Carmack built and in my view is the worst of the three. No stunning scenery, no interesting usage of the physics engine, a bit too dark, but DID have nice effects like the computer screens you could interact with. Probably the most stressful of the three games (my pal literally screams when he plays it!).

All are good and I can't wait to see mods of these games.

Haven't played FarCry yet but from reading the response on here, it's definitly on my next to buy list. But between Doom 3 and Half Life 2....well let's just say I've played Doom3 for about 3 hours total now and i've had the damn game for weeks.
Half Life 2's gameplay is amazing, but the story didn't quite pull me in at all unlike Half Life 1. I really don't have the desire to replay Half Life 2 either...maybe with the Blue Gravity Gun cheat save. Can't wait to see how STALKER turns out.

Close call between hl2 and far cry. I preferred tron 2.0 over doom 3, not sure what it is doing on this list.

HL2 - The story could have been so much better, it started off nice I wanted it to get better but it didn't, watch the movie Equilibrium and you'll know what I mean they should have mirrored that story.

FarCry - I liked HL2 and FarCry equally, what I liked in FC was that you had an objective and it didn't seem linear. MoH-PA is so linear that it's ridiculous. I think that FarCry 2 could be a HL2 killer.

Doom 3 - was boring and repetitive. Nice Gfx but that's it, it was more of an engine demo than a real game.

My surprise game of the year would have to be CoD United Offensive, the previous game that Grey Matter did was Return to Castle Wolfenstein. If you want heart pounding non-stop action this is it. and the Multiplayer beats HL2, FarCry and Doom3 anyday.

I have yet to play HL2 and Far Cry because I have vowed to finish Doom 3 first. I quoted this post because "stressful" is the perfect descriptor for this game. It is just scaring the hell out of me and I can play it in limited stretches. I'm not sure when I turned into such a fancy lad as I have always loved scary movies, books, etc The funny thing is, you can almost always predict when something will scare you, and yet it still manages to startle. For the suspense factor, I cannot foresee Doom3 being beaten in that category.

I look forward to playing HL2 and FC, but Doom 3 will always be #1 in my book simply because I cut my FPS teeth on the original. It just holds a special place in my heart. As far as #3 goes, I like the PDA entries, which I initially thought would be cumbersome to keep straight. The fate of some characters can be followed in the email. For example, poor Adam Berneche, who had been chastised for losing his PDA a few times. The corporate answer to dealing with incompetent staff: make him part of an experiment. Problem solved.

If theres one thing FC taught me, it is that you can give someone a randomly generated island with a bunch of guys on it, some folliage and a sniper rifle and they will love it.

doom 3 sucked. :(

the graphics are good, but the gameplay in general lacked alot of goodiness.
doom 3 multiplayer is perhaps the worst ive ever played from id. quake 4 will be no exception
when raven releases it.

half life 2 and far cry blow doom 3 way out of the water when it comes to the overall gameplay
experience. of the 3, hl2 is probly my favorite one. very good game.

I like Painkiller and Painkiller BOOH the best, actually.
Of the three choices, HL2 would be the one I chose. I have Farcry, but never got very involved in it. Doom3 pretty much sucked, but maybe I'll change my mind once I get into it a bit more.

I really liked FarCry, up until about half way through. After that, it just got more and more boring. And then a bit more boring. I finished it for the sake of it, and not because I was at all interested in what was going to happen next. The final few levels were a complete joke, and the cutscenes were worse than terrible.

I quite liked Doom 3, I think this is because I always played it in the dark with headphones - you had to get really into the game for it to 'work'. There were a lot of good features, but the whole thing got very samey. The end boss was so easy that I don't think I took any damage on it.

HL2 never stayed on the same thing for that long, had a good variety of settings, and had some very good ideas put into it. I would say the graphics engine for HL2 is probably the simplest of the three, but to me it is the most effective in implementation. It is definately the only game of the three where I didn't really know what was coming, and that was at all creative with the gameplay.

So between these three games, I think we have really proved that amazing graphics by themselves don't make a great game :) Also, even though all of these games have what is supposed to be a great physics engine, only one of them used this to make any difference to the actual gameplay.

I've only played a little bit of FarCry, but the fact that you can drive down a hill firing missles from a truck, then leap off that truck, sending it flying into a mass of enemies... that's a good time.

Gotta say I like the look and play of Far Cry, but the character voices and acting are juvenile. Doom 3 just sux chowda. Half Life 2 - only played demo, but I tellya, so far, it is WAY creepier and scarier than Doom 3. The muffled shrieks of those guys with the face crabs on.....very scary.

I've only played a little bit of each ( i own HL2 and am not that far, Doom 3 got me involved for about an hour, and Farcry was decent). From the little bit i played of each i have to go for HL2, even though the update installation was extremely annoying as i have dial up and only 1 phone line (really annoying when u spend $40 on a game, and being people need to use the phone sometimes takes you 2 days to be able to play it...)

I'm accually still dling the CS:S updates as i type (only 1 hr left!!!)

yah far cry was good but is got stale the levels were to numerous and very similar, the story was ok yet the really reason we all loved it was the jungle levels and the sizes of the levels plus who did not drool over the water
