Doom iii = 3.5/10 (gfx only)

i haven't played FC yet . . . . just the demo and i only had a radeon 8500 then . . . .

Big question for me . . . . with the latest patch is there a working in-game anytime 'save'?

i may get it if it does (i'm lazy) since it is becoming bargain bin. 😉

Actually Chronicles of Riddick: EfBB dc was my most enjoyable game and my GotY for '04. . . . inexpensive ($29.95 MSRP), completely unexpected and very original plus great gfx, voice acting and cutscenes. (9.0/10)

HL2 (8.5/10) fits in here just barely behind Thief - Deadly Shadows (8.8/10). . . . 😀
(HL2 is a very good game . . . Steam is a PITA)😛

. . . and then Painkiller and BOoH (8.0/10) with the addictive "fun" factor and VARIETY that Doom iii (3.5/10) is SO lacking. 🙂

Finally, Far Cry hit the bargain bin this week - $19.99 at retail everywhere - so i am d/l'ing patch v1.31 in preparation to play as i type . . . . i'll let you know in a week or so. 😉

BTW, you still need the hack for anytime save in FC. 😛

HL2 is good, but I like the fact you fight humans more in farcry. I also like the more reaslistic guns in facry.

When I shoot a 10ft long alien ant-lion with a nine-mil I want it to be realistic, DAMMIT!!!

I know what your getting at MetalMat, just couldn't help myself.

FarCry wins by a hair over HL2 ... with Doom limping a fair ways behind. I do look forward to all the mods for them though, and can't wait to see what people do with any of the engines.

If theres one thing FC taught me, it is that you can give someone a randomly generated island with a bunch of guys on it, some folliage and a sniper rifle and they will love it.

LOL 😀

HL2 best of the three. I finished Doom3 scary, but boring at the same time, didn't mind the dark it made the game better. Only halfway thru HL2 but love the game. Farcry didn't like the save system. Will play it somemore and see if I can get used to the saves.😀

you can easily "hack" FC to save "anytime"
(do a search)

(for '04 games: i still have Riddick as #1 . . . then Thief-DS . . . . HL2 . . . .DE:IW . . . . PK/BoOH . . . . FC . . . .. and still at the bottom . . . . Diii)

Far Cry by far(no pun).
Half Life 2 was just plain boring, Doom III wasn't that bad, but still a big disappointment.

I have Doom 3 and FryCry and I didn't vote because they are hard to play. I am afraid HL2 might be hard for me too.

Far Cry with HL2 just behind... won't bother mentioning Doom 3.

HL2 is without argument an extremely creative game, built on an incredible engine, but though the story was long and complex, It didn't draw me into the Half Life world. I didn't feel like I was actually there. A lot of the graphics are impressive and the sounds are just amazing (I especially enjoyed the feeling of pursuit with the Combine radio chatter echoing through urban alleys and hallways). The overall graphics render was quite a let-down for me though. While most of the environment was well created, the lighting and gray shade to everything made everything (including the characters models) seem fake, almost like claymation. Also the guns were pathetic, with little variety (I'm not talking about the "Super AT-4", grav gun, and crowbar, which were endless fun).

Far Cry had plenty of shortcomings also, but it was the first time I was drawn in and immersed the gaming experience and realism since the addicting Soldier of Fortune 2 multiplayer world (quite a while ago). I havent played any other game with such realistic weapons and environments, not to mention that Far Cry's tunnels and labs can only be surpassed in quality by the complex Doom3 lighting system (the only reason i will ever play D3 again). I've never had so much fun creeping through the jungles and merc compounds and the 1000+ meter visual distance (these qualities only get better with the 64 bit version) makes scout sniping from hide sites just incredible, creeping through the underbrush and as you peer through the foliage, your sniper barrell is laced with a dynamic shadow from each blade of grass... it's just a final touch that gives you a "woa... " inside.

So if you can get over the cartoon style voice acting and cliches, I think Far Cry is definately capable of producing the superior emotionally driven experience. Something like that first time you went to the big screen for Fellowship of the Ring...

BTW, the fear and dread of those mysterious Trigens that twists your jungle adventure into a nightmare rivals the suspense in Doom3 and Half Life 2 whose strongest point seems to be "fear of zombies". In any case, it's quite necessary to run these games on the best rig you can afford, if you want an epic experience.:wine:

I enjoyed Half-life 2 thouroughly, I'm still not to thrilled with steam updating all the time but I think that the engine for HL2 just blew Far Cry out of the water. Doom 3 was pretty mean also.

I didn't like HL2's linear design. There's only one path through, find it. 😛 But the graphics were very balanced, everything seemed to have the same attention devoted to it. Gameplay was good, I was always eager to see what was next... and what was next... and uh oh, it's 4AM :Q well, but just a half-hour more...

FarCry isn't so linear, I can see those radio towers and pick any feasible path to get there. Hmmm, bombard with the stolen patrol boat, then jump in the Humvee? 😕 Or shall I creep up to 500m, snipe someone, then pull back and use the "divide & conquer" approach this time 🙂 But the graphics aren't as consistent, some stuff is much better than other stuff. The voice acting and cut scenes are pretty bad, yep. Some of the levels are very challenging, with the worst one for me being near the end when I'm trapped in a long hall with about ten attackers. No divide & conquer options :Q

Doom3, haven't got it yet.

HL2 and Doom3 are tied in my book for two differant reasons. I enjoyed both of them a great deal, however, both had terrible replayability. That is why im a WoWhore now. Never played farcry.

Im in the same boat, i enjoyed HL2 and D3, i didnt like far cry as much.

I think I liked Far Cry the best. I'm 75% done, but it has been great so far. I also liked Doom3 and the expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil. It was pretty dang cool. But HL2, I think I played it for 30 minutes and got bored. I may give it another shot later when I finish Far Cry.

Overall FC>D3>HL2

Quit being a "quick save" pvssy. If you can't make it to the next save point, you suck at FPS games.

Far Cry easily. Love the scenery etc, I replay it often.

I put Painkiller (& BOoH) at #2. Varied gameplay, tarrot cards etc, good graphics (note the sky box), cool weapons made for a lot of replay value for me.

HL2. Really a good game, enjoyed it a bunch. But it's a short game and I don't see as much replay value as the two above.

D3 is last in my book among this group. While I occaisonally go back and have a look at cool levels like Hell etc. The game play is bit too redundant and plodding for my tastes.

i thought FarCry was awesome, graphics were amazing and it was just a lot of fun to play. HL2 was good also, but def lacked something, it was fun at first but got tiresome after a while. Doom 3, well i cant even finish it, i got annoyed with not being able to see anything and not being able to have flashlight and gun out at the same time, graphics were good though (good thing i borrowed and didnt pay for it)

MYOB . . . and you suck anyway, 😛

and how old is that quote? . . . i finished FC ages ago.

The games is STILL buggy even with v1.31 patch . . . it will occasionally crash to desktop taking your "progress" with it. i got sick of playing the same goofy cutscene over again and installed the quicksave "hacK'.

Voice acting, cutscenes and plot "stink". Gameplay, gfx and enemy AI "save" this game.
