I didn't think it was available yet... just standards talk. Interesting. What are the speeds you're getting vs. its advertised potential ?

I have a few B cards, so I can go Ad-hoc, but as I'm running 2k I can't bridge my DSL connection to the Ad-hoc network.

Next time I find a wireless router for super-cheap I'll switch over.

posting from a dell d500 using wireless g right now. i agree with rh71 on the batter life issue... stock my d500 lasted 3-4 hours, and that just wasn't enough. with a second battery and 7+ hours life battery life, i'm loving the wireless now.

I finally made the switch since $40 for a wirelessG bundle was too good to pass up.

Honestly though, you need a good laptop battery life to really take advantage. My 2-year old battery (work supplied) lasts only an hour these days. :(

I have been sitting on a couch than a regular computer desk since feb. in fact, I don't even have a desk to use with my lappy.
my lappy battery > yours, I can easily get 3 hours out from the battery.

my laptop + wireless is great for bathroom.
then you are lying in your sig. ;) I'm hoping to get my T40 from work soon... that should do it.

it is depends how you use it. ibm advertise 5 hours battery life. you have to turn the cpu speed to the slowest and lcd brightness all the way down.
I have 25 charges on my battery, so it is all good.

t40 is lovely, but it is little too big and too heavy for my taste? LOL :p

802.11a came out around the same time as 802.11b.

I just did an informal speed test (transfered a 300MB file over the LAN) from a distance of 10 feet with 128bit WEP and with 100% signal strength. According to the Task Manager, I was getting between 25 and 30% utilization of the theoretical 54Mbps. Which comes out to be 1.5MB to 2MB per second.

It's nothing too impressive. However, I'm using a first generation 802.11a AP. I've heard that the newer 802.11a equipment is much better.

As for range, I've gone about 30 feet and had 60% signal strength.

Hardware I'm using:
IBM T40 with an 802.11a/b/g mini-PCI card
Netgear HE-102 802.11a Access Point

Yep, for 2 years now. In the process of upgrading to G. Got that d-link router off newegg for $60 - $30 rebate. Can't beat that. The cards are more expensive than the router though. :(

No, for 20m^2 it's not really needed, specially since I only have on computer.

I voted B.

I technically haven't yet, since I haven't recieved the router, but since Comcast just recently nuked all free 2nd IPs, I was forced to buy one.

I picked up the D-Link 614+.

Wireless needs to get a lot faster, a lot cheaper, and a lot more secure before ill even consider it.
256bit WEP with MAC address filtering isn't secure enough for you? :p

As for speed.. as long as you're getting at least a 3.0mbps connection, it shouldn't matter much unless you're on a faster connection than that, or do a lot of LAN stuff.

I believe there is a new standard known as WPA that is supposed to be more secure than WEP.

Added poll option.

The only alternative to WEP encryption I see in my Netgear 614 router setup is WPA-PSK (at latest firmware). The Netgear 511 PCCard does have a newly released firmware that adds WPA-AES but there've been many reports of the install not working (code 10 - device not ready). I tried it myself and got the same thing.. went back to drivers that came on the CD. Anyway... I don't see the point of upgrading the PCCard to AES if the router doesn't have WPA-AES as an option... is Netgear just slow ??

have a wireless router but am not using it's wireless capibilities yet. Needed a new router and thought I may as well spend a few bucks more and future proof a little at the same time
