i thought that you HAD to turn off the engine, but it's not like i drive anyways. OTOH: my parents always do turn it off

I mounted rather large sticker signs on the pumps stating that you must turn your engine off, no smoking and please refrain from cell phone use while pumping gas, the last one is not to prevent a fire (supposed static hazard, busted by Mythbusters no less) but to speed those up who decide to keep blabbering on their damn phones once the pump stops.

I leave my engine running I smoke a cigarette I try shoving my cell phone down the gas pipe and finally I bring a glass rod and a piece of silk and rub them together while I touch the end of the nozzle

The one thing I know for sure not to do is to get back into my car while it's filling... with all the static electricity...

the cell phone thing is a myth, it is pretty whacky that gas station/oil companies put that warning up without any evidence behind it

but the smoking and turn off engine thing should be intuitivly obvious to even the most casual observer

Yes. Even if there wasn't a very slim chance of fire I would still do it.

NEVER leave your car running when you are out of it in a public place. It's just far too easy for some idiot to jump in and drive off with it.

You can get back in your car. Just be sure to ground yourself before touching the pump handle again.

Here in IL when it's below 0 and windy, I ALWAYS get back in the car. I just ground myself after I get out again.

I always turn the car off. I never get back in the car and I never turn off my cell phone (don't usually speak on it at the pump though).

Not too long ago, my mom didn't turn the car off when she was filling up (grandmother was in the car and it was hot that day), she then called me and asked why the gauge was still at empty. I said, "restart the car." She said "oh, well, I didn't turn it off when I was filling it up.." :rolleye;

There was a mythbusters episode about the cell phone thing and they busted it.

You still shouldnt leave the car running.

Yeah it's the law i think to turn off the engine but i just saw a guy today in the morning that left the car on and left the pump, pumping on its own by putting the gas tank lid on it and sat back inside the car until it finish.


edit: as far about the cell phone myth, i believe the mythbusters that it doesnt happen but its probably static charge that causes the issue when you get out of the car.
even so i leave the cell phone inside the car while i pump.
