Once while filling up, I noticed the guy next us was running while filling. It was like -15 with a wind chill that day, so passengers inside had demanded it be left on, I guess. Then we sat there for a REALLY long time while the tank filled up, when we noticed it wasn't filling because the pump was leaking. :shocked: So, we reported it, went to another pump, and ANOTHER guy pulls in and starts pumping and filling!!!!! :shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked: AND THE PUMPS LEAKING!!!!!!!! :shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:
:shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:
THEN as we were leaving (lucky to be alive) someone ELSE started filling while running the engine!!!!!!!!!
:shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:
:shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:

The one thing I know for sure not to do is to get back into my car while it's filling... with all the static electricity...

You can get back in your car. Just be sure to ground yourself before touching the pump handle again.

Here in IL when it's below 0 and windy, I ALWAYS get back in the car. I just ground myself after I get out again.

Erm... wouldn't it be a problem if you touched any metal part of the car while you were getting out?

Not if you do it away from the nozzle where there are no gas fumes.

When I get out I touch the car, then walk around the car to the pump island on my way back to where I'm filling up and I touch the side of the pump. Then I feel safe touching the pump handle again.

The danger lies in having a static charge in your body and touching the pump handle. Touching another part of the car or pump far from the fumes shooting out of the filler hole is not a problem. The spark HAS to be right near the area the fumes are in a high enough concentration to ignite. That is only right next to the filler hole/pump handle area.

ok, then answer me this: there is actually a full service gas station near me where they pump the gas for you. of course the gas is a little more expensive, but i go there when it is freakin cold out or raining cause it's worth it to me. so anyways, when it's cold they have told me i can leave the car and running and "stay warm" while they pump the gas. wouldn't you think they know what the fvck they are talking about? why would they do this if it's so dangerous?

My friend does that at a full service station, he leaves the car on all the time and the attendants don't care.

i really think it's an old wive's tale that your car will "blow up" if you leave it running.

You can fill gas without shutting off the engine with usually no problems, but why waste the same gas you are adding to the car?

The problem is only if your car backfires which may or may not result in bad things.

My car at least will freak out if the gas cap is not on while the car is on.

It is. Why WOULD it blow up if you leave it running? The exhaust pipe will be just as hot if you leave it running as if you JUST shut it off. That said, I shut it off, and I never get back in the car while pumping.

I heard they were going to let the drivers in Nascar leave their cars running when they get fuel this year as well....

Urban legends, peeps

I always turn my car off and pocket the key. I could just see someone jumping into my truck and driving away if I left it running!

If it is really cold I sometimes leave it on and get back in the vehicle. But probably 95% of the time I turn the vehicle off. About 50% of the time i get back in waiting for it to fill up.

I actually failed emissions cause the check engine light was on because the gas cap was not tight enough.

You put the gas tank lid to let it pump on its own?
don't they have signs that say don't do that?
