Poll for THUNDERBIRD Vs P3

OK I been thinking of building another computer, and I want most of the stuff to be uptodate and also for FUTURE upgrades. But the problems I been having with is deciding which processor, Thunderbird OR the P3(range around 800mhz or higher) to get, and if I have that processor which is the best motherboard out there that supports it too?
So I want to see your suggestions

Your friend is wrong.
Thunderbird with A7V would be my recomendation.

wel the duron is "about" as good as a p3 so a t-bird is just as good as a p3 if not *slightly* better for a way beter price. The t-bird also has a way beter floating point unit witch means it's faster in games. The t-bird is cheaper than a p3(alot cheaper in the 850-1 ghz range 1.1 they have no competition)

The AMD Thunderbird and the Pentium III are basically on a par with each other at the moment. Sometimes the thunderbird will outperform the pentium in some benchmarks and vice versa. Although I believe the thunderbird outperforms the pentium 3 more. The question is would you rather pay ~$130 for an 800Mhz thunderbird or ~$225 for a pentium 3? So get the thunderbird for about 130 and the asus a7v for another 130.

Look at prices. Go with an 800 or 900 MHz AMD Thunderbird with an ASUS A7V motherboard without integrated audio (unless you're really cheap that is... lol)

The Thunderbird will probably beat the P3 in most games that dont have SSE.
From what i have seen from benchmarks they are about equally as fast, where one wins one benchmark the other wins another. But like others are saying for its price the TB is an amazing deal compared to the P3.

I just bought a TB 800 & a Abit KT7 with 256MB of PC133. (should be in on Monday).

True, but only in two popular games, Quake3 and Unreal Tournament. And even the difference really is minimal. On the other hand, for games that really require lots of CPU power - namely flight sims (Falcon4 is a prime example) and massive RTS games, Athlon Thunderbird has a quite a substansial lead over equally clocked P3: Flight sim, RPG and RTS benches at Ace's Hardware.

IMO benchmarking people should break out of their strange attraction of first person shooters.

ok, since it looks like everyone is going for the thunderbird, here is the next questions. I also heard that some memory card are not stable with the asus a7v, and the question is what are the options in getting a memory stick that cost under $120 for 128mb, that is stable with the asus a7v?

ALSO, I been thinking of getting the aiw radeon for this system too, would that have a different effect in performace with a thunderbird or the P3??

I hate to say this... but the way prices are I don't think a P3 is even an option. If I were to build a system I think a T-Bird is the way to go.

if you get non generic stuff(like kingston value ram) you wil be fine. Some of the generic stuf does not work but some of it does so you might as well try your luck if you want to save a few $

Intel will no dought beat any AMD in the game field.But you haft to look at all the stupid benchmarks that say this and mean that.Example Nvidia,s new utra card in high detail is not that much faster if at all than the GF2.(-see PCGamer vol 7 page 170-) In low detail the urtra kicks a$$ but how many here buy the best to run in low detail!!!;to me it is a waste of time for testing the crap with a low detail for the new so called best replacement card.

Completely flat out incorrect. P3 only managed to beat Tbird in Quake3 and that's about it.

As for GeForce2 Ultra not being faster than GF2 GTS in high res/high detail, I suggest you to stop buying PCGamer's bullcrap and check these and these benchmarks out.

I think the reason he asked for the aiw redeon because of its multimedia features and game play. And that's only thing that would go with that is again the AIW redeon.

Tbird + Asus A7V (running one right now). The only downside is the sh1tty VIA chipset, I had to set the Geforce2 MX to AGP2X/no fast writes to achieve stability. BUT...89FPS timedemo001 at 800x600x32 Quake3 High Quality still isn't bad...

1 Ghz P3: $665 (Flip chip) plus shipping

tell me what you get for the extra $400 ?
