Almost got one in Dallas a few years ago. I was downtown and walked up to a corner ready to cross the street. The light was red and about 6-8 others were standing there waiting for the light. It was a six-lane one-way street. I looked and there wasn't a car in sight almost to the horizon, so I crossed. I could have crawled and still made it across easily.
On the corner I was approaching stood a cop. When I got to the sidewalk he yelled "Hey, you, come over here!" He asked me what I thought I was doing, and I was obviously mystified and had no idea what he was talking about.
"Didn't you see that light was red?"
Yes, I did.
"Didn't you see the other people waiting for the light to change?"
Yes, I did, but I looked and there were no cars coming, so I thought it was OK.
"Are you from Pittsburgh or something?"
Yes, actually! I am from Pittsburgh. Why?
"Here in Dallas you cross when the light says Walk. Don't do it again."
Luckily(?), Pittsburgh has a reputation for rampant jaywalking and that is what apparently saved me. I guess he figured no one who knew how strict they are would be stupid enough to jaywalk right in front of a cop. 🙂
