Just accidently hit the capslock key for the upteenth time.

Do any anandtechers see a use for this key?

What would you put there in place of the capslock key???

Is there anyway to disable it in windows 98?

Closest I have come is the accessibility options which makes it beep so I know when I accidently hit it.

This is a stupid question.. I use the damn thing all the time, I'm sure that there are many people who use it for many different reasons. There are much stupider keys than the CAPS LOCK
key.

As smp points out, it's rather handy when you want to write HTML or perhaps are coding a program, caps sometimes just looks better overall.
Heh I remember when I used to write things in basic and qbasic, only CAPS looked right for a lot of it.

edit:

On a funny note, I remember a friend of mine who never used shift, he would turn on capslock, type the one letter he wanted capitalized and then turn off capslock. A rather roundabout way of capitalizing eh?

HTML does not need to be in CAPS. On top of that, you still need to use your shift key anyways when doing HTML... mine as well get used to it.

Caps Lock is useless IMO. I just hit it on a rare occasion when I try and hit "a" More of a pain... You could always pop the key off....

Anyways, the answer is NO! I have no use for that key... they can take that off as well as that damn windows key.

I realize it doesn't have to be in caps! :disgust:

I'm saying it looks better overall, adding a sense of seperation (from the content) to the tags that the brackets just don't provide and is simpler than spacing patterns or placing tags in a certain way to separate them. I'm sure you would argue that you could have the tags in different colors, etc, but I find caps is simply easier to read and focus on for single words (I'm sure it looks terrible to have a whole paragraph in caps ;))

I use to use it when I played everquest, if you wanted to tell something to your guild when you were on a raid. You'd go

EVERYONE GET READY TO FIGHT!

I guess it gave you some confidence that people may see your words if htey are less then half a centimeter bigger...

I am using CAPS at work - some old control programs using CAPS only.
Also some of my customers required to use logic descriptors in CAPS.
With Windows programs slowly coming to controls field CAPS will slowly dissapear.

I can't say I use it very often, but OTOH it doesn't bother me.

Get a good keyboard and you won't hit it by mistake.

The Windows key is an entirely different matter though....

If you have lots of tags in your HTML it helps if they are in CAPS .. you can differentiate the tags from the rest, easier to debug etc...
This applies to PHP, javascript, action script etc...

I would hate to have to look at your HTML and make sense of it. The windows key is great, if you use windows. How else are you gonna open an explorer window? ;)

Windows key?

Windows+M keys works great for getting to your desktop in a hurry without reaching for the mouse (or going to click on the desktop icon) and multiple windows open!!

OK SO PEOPLE WHO HAND CODE html, AND CAN'T AFFORD A GOOD EDITOR LIKE CAPS LOCK.

And some poorly coded legacy programs demand it.

So what's that .0001 % of the computing population????

Does not seem like it justifies an OVERSIZED key in a promiment position.

I especially resent it on laptops where space is at a premium.

As to getting a better keyboard or learning to type:

Got my computer set up in the family room so I can listen to T.V. and watch the wife while sitting on the couch cruising the web, working or playing games. Caps normaly gets accidently hit when I dump the keyboard on the rug, the mouse hits it, I or the cat step on it, or I hit it when I grab the keyboard out from under the couch. Don't think improving my typing or getting a better keyboard will fix that.

Sigh. Like the SysRq and Scroll Lock the Caps lock will probably be here forever and ever.

they don't need to get rid of it... they just need to move it somewhere else and put a more useful button there. those windows keys and the right click key work pretty well... maybe microsoft can come up with another key for windows.

<<maybe microsoft can come up with another key for windows>>

PLEASE NO!

what they should do is totally redesign the keyboard, make the capslock key smaller, no more scroll lock, maybe even a detachable numpad (need more mousing room for my games :) )

Yeah, my right shift key is really small now to accommodate the space for the turbo key. and the the insert, home, pgup, pgdn, del, end keys were already shifted down to my annoyance for the power, wakeup, and sleep keys. Er... The windows key does come in handy like Win+L for locking the comp quickly and various other shortcut keys. The caps lock is useful to show emotion like this: DON'T REMOVE THE CAP LOCKS!!!

One Thing That Surprises Me For All You People That Need The Caps Lock Key So You Can Express Emotion, Or Say You Have To Have A Caps Lock Key To Type Caps Letters When Programming.

WHY DON"T YOU JUST TYPE WITH YOUR PINKY ON THE SHIFT KEY? I DO THAT ALL THE TIME AND HAVE NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER. MY RING FINGER JUST TAKES OVER FOR THE "A"s "Q"s and "Z"s FEELS LIKE A NATURAL WAY TO TYPE FOR ME. IT's HOW THEY DID IT BACK IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF TYPING, BEFORE THE INVENTION OF THE capslock.

ARE Y'all TWO FINGERED TYPIST AND CAN"T TYPE IF ONE OF YOUR FINGERS IS OCCUPIED HOLDING A SHIFT KEY DOWN?????

HELP ME UNDERSTAND ALL YOU STRANGE CAPSLOCK LOVING PEOPLE!!!!!!!
