I used to but have been smoke free for 10 months now. I started for the same reason most people do, peer pressure, just hanging around with friends who started and I was curious and tired and ended up smoking full time for 7 years as a result, however 10 months ago I just got it into my head that I was the only thing holding me back from quitting so I decided to just quit cold turkey and did it. I kind of old it to a friend of mine that told me a while ago that you are the only person that can control you, got me thinking and realized that each time I had tried in the past to quit the only reason it didn't work was because I gave in.

Never started, thank god. I have asthma and second hand smoke sometimes makes me cough and just feel overall bad and violated. Smoking in some place that I have to go through should be illegal, like these jerks that sit infront of my apartment and smoke, waiting for someone to open the gate for them (they don't even live here). I don't see a problem smoking in private places.

It's true that nicotine is an essential part of your bodies biochemistry, but cyanide and carbon monoxide, as well as the thousands of other chemicals in cigarette smoke, are not. In fact, any cyanide or carbon monoxide you inhale 100% depletes the effect of having extra nicotine in your cells, as soon as it enters your bloodstream, and more. If you smoke every day your lungs will never heal.

My girlfriends father has been smoking for 40 years. He has major sleep apnea because of the damage it's done to his throat and soft palate, and it is very scary listening to him sleep. I fear that he will die in his sleep every night, he stops breathing for over a minute many times a night. He has to sleep in a different room from his wife, or else she can't sleep. I can identify with you guys that do smoke, because of knowimg him and other people. It's your decision.

DrNoobie's pic is a cat scan of lung cancer.

You might have thought that herbal tobacco is safe. Well, it does not contain nicotine so that reduces the chances of getting heart disease, but there will still be tar in the smoke which can damage your lungs.

Most smokers are aware of the dangers of smoking. They may think that they have a right to smoke; after all, it is not against the law. Perhaps it is not so simple. When a smoker ends up in hospital needing treatment for emphysema, or lung cancer, their treatment costs money. The National Health Service is paid for out of our taxes. Their disease costs us money.

Yeah, and illegal aliens cost us quite a substantial amount in health care costs also of which they pay nil.

Let's go, Pakistan!

I chew paan and effin love it when I can get my hands on it. There are a couple of good shisha dens in my area that have amazing variety, and they'll make new blends if you'll go in on the batch 50/50. Plus, they've got more kinds of tea than I can imagine.

But, yeah, if you're a cigarette smoker you're pretty much supporting one big POS industry. Grow and roll your own, please?

And thats why in this sense, smokers are no better than illegal aliens.

I don't smoke, nor do I have a problem with people who do, it just annoys me that someday I will be paying for their charred lungs to be kept alive while they die slowly and painfully. The cons definitely outweigh the pros for me, and I just can't see why people would smoke cigarettes while knowing the terrible effects of them. But, it's not illegal and as long as you aren't smoking where im breathing it, go for it.

I don't smoke, drink or anything like that. I'm a runner so I even avoid soda and fast food :) (well, except Taco Bell. I'm addicted to Grilled Stuft Burritos)

I'd be less annoyed with smokers if they were forced to pay for their own healthcare when they develop one of the many diseases smoking causes.

If you want to smoke, you should be allowed to smoke, but not in any public places, even open public places, like parks, etc.

break the habit and quit smoking, it doesn't look cool.
and most of all, i don't need to inhale all the secondhand smoke

I probably have a different reason for smoking then anyone else. If I really need to stay up and I'm dead tired, one cigar will keep me up for about 10 hours. I get huge niccotine cravings for about a week after, but I fight them and I'm good. Caffiene in drink form just does not work for me, and caffene in pill form scares the hell out of me because the last (and only) time I've done it, I could feel my heart beating through my chest and could hear the beat in my ears. I thought I was going around scared that I was about to have a heart attack.

I don't know what you're drinking for caffeine but some people will drink a cup of tea or a chocolate milk and expect it to make a difference. Try a 5 shot Americano, or just drink a 5 shot espresso and you will feel it.

What do people get out of nicotine patches/gum/lozenges? I was just thinking yesterday that it was surprising that more teens/adults don't use those instead of starting smoking. I guess the whole "smoking is cool" idea wouldn't transfer. And it's expensive.

I wonder if it's more expensive to treat a smoker dying of cancer for a year than to keep someone who dies of old age in a home for 10. I bet in some cases the smokers are saving health care money. Does anyone have any statistics?

This has been proven over and over again. However, it doesn't stop the myth from living, and the nanny-staters from using it.

Either way, it's just another example of why socialism is anathema to freedom.

Social smoking for me .... it's sometimes a break for us from a party and just sit outside and relax for a little bit. I only smoke when I go back home to Austin though.

CIgarettes are like potato chips you just can't stop with the first one. Do yourself a favor and stop smoking before it is to late.!

Can anybody else smell smokers travelling in cars in front of you on the highway? Someone can be puffing away with the window cracked, and I can smell them several cars back, even when my windows are closed & @ 80mph. Smelly stuff.

Smoking is nasty. You might as well walk around w/ sh!t in your pants, IMO, you don't smell much better. I certainly don't like smelling it when I go out to eat. Take your lazy addicted asses outside and to smoke. The fresh air is good for you.
