Abit should give you a free one via RMA. Those NB fans are garbage.

no I wouldn't shut down... actually if I'm not downloading anything, I just leave the finished torrents seeded... which is what it's about.

The only time it's shutdown is when I go away for 2+ days (and I don't have my WINTV scheduler set to record anything during the time away).

Electricity isn't free.

Turning on and off all the time puts stress on the PS and HDDs. I leave all my computers on all the time, including my laptop... and i haven't had a single computer issue in about 7 years.

I have the same board... and I pulled the plug on that fan altogether... it was acting up on me too.

Yawn. Yes, my electric bill was $67 last month. Thats with 100% electric heat/appliances. I'm sure my one computer was 95% of that.

Neither is my time. Cost of the little power it east while it sits there < Cost of me waiting for bootup / login / desktop startup. I guess if your time is worthless ...;)

can someone do the math and tell us on average how much electricity (in $'s) is used when only the tower is left on for about 8-10 hours ?

My unedumakated guess would be something like 10 cents.

I'm not sure what to search for, but I know this has been done before. IIRC, it was a fairly trivial amount.

Yeah I shut it down. I used to leave it on but a while back I left it on to a go to a friends house, when I came back the computer was smoking... the fan stopped turning while I was away & the cpu overheated/melted.

My computer is only shut down when I am away for 2 or more days, upgrades, power outtages, or the cat stepping on the off button on the surge strip.

Most days its on from when I first use it to when I go to sleep. If I'm heading out for more than an hour or so, then I usually turn if off if its idle.

If someone has one of those Kill-A-Watt things... Plug a surge protector into it and then plug in your compute,r monitor, speakers etc and calculate what it uses. SHould be pretty quick for someone that has one.

Electricity isn't free.

True, but for those of us who run Seti@Home or another distributed computing project...here is a short breakdown.

Most computers only eat up about 30-60 watts of electricity. Yes, just because you have a 400 watt power supply, you won't eat up that much. In all reality, your computer uses less than 1/2 the electricity of 60 watt lightbulb when it isn't doing anything.

I ran a voltage meter on my computer outlet, and when my monitor kicks into sleep mode, my computer eats up only 40 watts of electricity. That means it costs a meager .72 cents to run it a month. A bug zapper costs less to run 24/7.

If you want to save money, go out and buy flourescent bulbs for your lamps and light fixtures. That helps a lot more than shutting your computer off every night in terms of saving money on electric bills.
