Electricity isn't free.
An idle PC with the monitor off uses maybe 30W. That's half a standard lightbulb. That's maybe $1 per month.
In the meantime, keeping your PC running 24/7 is the absolute best thing you can do to ensure its reliability, especially with the hard drives.

When in the dorm (free electricity) 24/7...when I'm using my parents power (over the summer), I'm courteous and shut it off at night.

I had to break a 23 day uptime for thanksgiving break. :(

reboots are bad for the long-term health of a computer?

I power off the monitor, other than that it runs 24/7 unless I'll be gone for an extended period of time. Then I'll turn it off.

I shut it off when I don't use because:

1) bills
2) little brothers
3) other brother
4) mom?
5) viruses
6) Dust build up in the system

Not reboots, cold boots. Turning your computer off for a period of time and then back on. Reboots are fine for your computer as it never actually turns off (just resets).

No, I leave the computer running full speed, all the time.

The monitor is set to turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity.

I turn it all off if I'm leaving for more than a few days, though.

No one can casually access my system because it's password protected, and there is no need to worry about viruses by simply leaving it on.

Yep, thermal expansion and contraction is the worst wear and tear on a system.

one box hibernates most of the time

server is always doing stuff, so it never is not in use
Other box is in hibernation when not in use, in World of Warcraft otherwise.

If I turn it off the Chipset fan will make horrible noises for hours before it gets down to reasonable levels again...... yeah I know I shuld change it.

<--- Needs NF7-S chipset fan

Abit should give you a free one via RMA. Those NB fans are garbage.

<< IC7 and NF7-S owner

Don't feel like sending in the MoBo for RMA (no posting here :Q). Just need a new fan or heatsink. (Which one?)

And people complain about their electric bill. Turn off the fricking computer! Or at least put it on Standby. I shut down every night.

Concerning power consumption:

It doesn't cost much to have it on all day. On an individual basis this is cool but if you like to think big then shutting it down makes sence. If everyone shuts down their rig the energy savings on a national level is ,I think, quite large.
It just depends on how you think.

Your point was the agreement that the cost of the electricity of leaving your PC on 24/7 is high enough to be stupid.

Basically paying $1 per month to help ensure longer lifespan of your equipment is stupid?
