Yeah, division is really useless...

Yes, being able to do it by hand is. Useless to a majority of people.

What if you don't have a calculator or computer near you? This is some really basic crap that you (should have) used for many years in your life just to get through school...

This country is really headed down the shitter :(

Lol, If you think people not being able to do long division by hand is contributing to this country "heading down the shitter", you are completely out of touch with reality.

Somehow I'm not too worried about running into a "long division crysis".

Actually I'm not out of touch with reality. Many of the best jobs in this country require some decent skill with numbers, and more and more of those jobs are filled by non-Americans. Comparatively, the US educational system outputs some real pathetic competition.

Took me a few minutes to remember how to do the long division but i did get it to one decimal place before looking at the help link.
Multiplication was easier.

More and more jobs being filled with non-Americans has nothing to do with Americans lack of skill with numbers. It has everything to do with non-Americans being cheap labor.

I'm not talking about immigration taking over blue collar jobs... lol.

Neither am I.

19, I messed up the decimals in the division equation (I got 388.90103004) but I correctly completed the multiplication problem.

Then what are you talking about?

I'm talking about engineering, science, and finance type jobs. I've worked in those sectors and a large number of the people I worked with were not educated in this country pre-college age.

I misunderstood. When you said "Many of the best jobs in this country require some decent skill with numbers, and more and more of those jobs are filled by non-Americans.", I thought you meant these jobs were being filled by non-Americans still living in their home country.

Being able to do long division by hand is still useless to the majority of Americans. Not everyone wants to be in engineering, science or finance.

To look down on someone because they can't do long division is ludicrous. That's my opinion and you have stated yours. I won't cloud this thread any longer.

There's nothing magical about a decimal place.

Even if your answer is correct, we could move the decimal place on the numerator over by one and get

38.8(9130434782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)....
or 3.88(9130434782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)....

or 388(913043.4782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)....

Therefore making it "start" repeating later or earlier.

I was referring to this particular problem, when you are dividing a whole number by 23, the repeating can't start that late.

the correct answer is 388.91304347826086960869...

starting after 15 digits, the last 5 digits repeat. Most calculators will not show 15 digits good ones calculate more then they show. Few, if any will give the correct answer to a problem like this one.

The repeating has to be for all the digits, it can't start that late.

388.(9130434782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)(9130434782608695652173)....

Really???

Did you actually DO the problem? Just why can't it start that "late".

Justify your response please.
BTW, I did the division by hand, the number I gave is correct, yours is not.

I didn't do the problem, but you referenced the proof in your earlier posts yourself.

The multiplication is easy. The division is just tedious.
I'm 16 and do mental math and stuff long hand alot because I am to lazy to take out a calculator.
(Knowledge bowl math questions help too)
