I got it back when Geocities was new (anyone remember the neighborhoods? heh. those were fun... and when Geocities used to allow porn websites? that was even more fun ) I haven't actually used it for anything worthwhile in almost 4 years, though. I just upload files onto it occasionally, when it's easier than e-mailing a file to myself.
recently, I've been thinking of hooking myself up with an FTP server.
i maintain some like 5-6 domains, hosted in different places (dixiesys, e-rice, 1and1). none of them are business oriented, just family and small community type of things.
I own 2 names but they are hosted at the same place for $8.95/mo. Great plan for a developer fugging around. 500MB/PHP/ColdFusion/ASP/etc. They're a bit on the slow side if you're looking to host something useful though. Still I run quite a few web apps on there..
i have 3 domains currently, i went in with some other ATOT'ers on a server, i need to get 2 of my domains moved to my share of the box, but i am lazy. so right now i have 2 web hosting plans paid through ~june/july , and a small share of a dedicated web server
10$ a year for the domain 10$ for dns2go 45$ a month for 1500/384 dsl and the server is in our basement
edit: server is Athlon XP 2000+ with 512 of ram
not sure of the board or ram type since my brother built it
120gig drive for storage
2 10 gig 10,000rpm SCSI drives in raid running the OS which is 2k3
hosts the website and email server and ftp
also does routing and firewall for our home network
also have a ups that will run the whole thing for 5 or 6 hours > uptime is 108 days
