I prefer Lowe's a little more too although I shop at Home Depot more since there's one only 3 minutes from my house now. :D Home Depot seems to have a better selection on the more traditional things that most people need. Lowe's seems to cater to the professionals a bit more. That could be totally wrong, but that's been my perception.

The biggest one is probably the quality of their lumber ... their dimensioned lumber is often complete crap, and green as hell so it twists & warps like crazy if you don't get it in right away.

What I really like about HD is that I don't have to screw around price-shopping. If I can find it @ HD, they almost certainly have the best price in town any day of the week. No shopping around, waiting for "sales", etc.

Now that they've opened up a Lowes in town, I tend to prefer them more. The lumber is certainly better.

Totally agree... have to spend hours eyeing lumber to find the studs that are not warped. But at least they store the lumber indoors... some places around here leave lumber outside exposed to the elements. I have a Dykes nearby though which has great quality lumber (bit pricey though)

I don't mind going there to get things i actually need, but I can't stand just walking around the place looking at lumber ... thats boring as heck.

ie ... if the time spend in the building is like 0-30 min, I like the place, any longer, and I would hate it.

I hate it! You know why? I pulled my groin there the other day. But other than that I can't really complain as they have a lot of axes and whatnot... I want one of those shingle scrapers so I could go about and impale people with it... Oops I mean scrape shingles

Just because you don't know which end of a hammer you hold onto is no reason to slag others for their choices.... :p :D

Hey, I bet if you asked real nicely an orange apron would have pulled your groin for you...

haha i dont know about your homedepot but i think you have it completly backwards, sure lowes lumber is "rated: better but everytime i have bought lumber from lowes its warped and twisted. and they have had 2 different lowes in this area alone with all the same consequences. also you should let the lumber completly dry before placement with the PT/arsnic will make the wood swell a little bit

the local lowes the people there are brain dead. i went in there none of them offered to help me with anything (#1 customer service) and you ask them something ummm...umm...ughhh...yea i dont know let me find you someone....then they run for the break room.

lowes is in debt. home depot is the 2nd largest retailer in the WORLD after walmart...lowes has a lot more to do before they beat HD

as for the stocks...Lowes beat HD in comps not anual sales and that is why the stocks went down.

home depot gets 15% off on stocks which i think is better than a measly 10% off merch

and for the guy that pulled his groin ask for help if you cant handle it yourself...other than that learn how to lift properly..i throw on average 2 pallets of concrete a day (approx 100-110 bags 60lb) shingles...plywood....just lift right and youll be fine and like i said if you cant handle it im sure someone will be more than willing to help you

HD just had a couple corperate problems with a few changes but the company is comming back..and truthfully lowes has big shoes to fill

as for the person who said there are numerous "orange aprons" walking around...how come every customer says they can never find anyone??

I don't mind the place, I go to menards though since they are normally cheaper, but Home depot's staff for the most part knows what they're talking about, as opposed to Menards...

My only complaint is the long wait at the checkout lines... even though there's about 10 lines open.

IME, locally, Lowes lumber is MUCH better then HD ... Their stuff is abbsolute crap. I went through a whole stack of 2x12x16 a few weeks ago, and didn't find a single one I really trusted to hold up my stairs. All splits, huge knots, or outside pieces, and sopping wet. I went to Lowes, and picked three right off the top of the stack.

But to be honest, I don't buy much lumber at either unless it's a few pieces on the way home from work, or on Sundays. The local mom & pop lumberyard has better lumber & service (and I have an account) then either Lowes or HD. But they close @ 5 and aren't open sundays.

I'd say that the HD people are slightly more clueful then the Lowes people ... but frankly, that's like saying Hoover is better then Eureka ... they both suck :D
Actually, on nights and weekends, you can sometimes find tradespeople working a second job that actually have a clue. But if you want blank stares, try talking to some of those schmucks on a weekday over lunch.

Your point?? I think Lowes tries harder. and besides, bigger isn't always better. Just look at Microsoft ;)

I have been given my own parking space in front of Home Depot (or as my 3.5 year old call it 'The Big Orange Store').

I wish that were the case here. I hate going to crowded stores like Walmart or Home Depot at their peak time which is unfortunately about the only time that I'm available to go while they're open. Just navigating the crowded parking lot and aisles can be a frustrating experience. Unless I absolutely HAVE to go, I rarely visit Walmart during normal business hours anymore. I always go about 11pm. I wish I could do that with Home Depot too.

I like Home depot, but, don't love it. I dislike lowes, but don't hate it. So, On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give home depot a 7 and lowes a 4.

Reason:
Lowes prices are higher on things I've comparatively shopped.
Lowes return policy and enforcement is more strict than HD. HD is more flexible about time of return, condition of goods, and missing receipts.

The Lowes is about 10miles away vs
Homedepot which has about 10 stores in a 10mile radius of me, the closes being about 1.5miles away and another every mile or two beyond that.

So, in general I shop Home Depot. However, I appreciate Lowes existance and am glad they are forcing competition on Home Depot.

I'm just finishing up remodeling the bathroom. I think I've gone there at least once a day for the last 10 days running.

I used to hate HD but the more I shop there, the more I like it. I think the main reason is organizaton of there store is poor. Lowes is clearly a better organized store. Also, Lowes seems to have more helpful salespeople, but Home Depot is by far closer so I still go there more often.
