Same thing happens on sidewalks, in hallways at college and in malls. I thought it was just natural to stick on the right side but it is apparent most people (around here) don't.
I find it thoroughly annoying and so I tend to shop at the grocery store during the very slow hours.
The worst is when people just leave their cart in the middle of the whole damn thing and pick something off the rack and say, "Hey Darlene would'ja come loooook at dis". Or when they have a little brat pack that they let obscure the pathways for what seems like minutes on end. You have to plant your cart there, have their 5 or 6 kids stare up at you like you're an alien, and, when the mother pulls the brood away you flash that stupid like "ohhh those silly kids", smirk at her in a manner to suggest you forgive her mistakes. Then again, like most people who do that, they are too stupid to have courtesy and say "sorry" or smile back... in fact, you'll often get a dirty look from them like you just inconvenienced their day (that is if you're even lucky enough to get them to move), they go back to picking out the best brand of hot dogs or spanking their kids in public for asking their mom to buy something ("damnit bobby-rays wes dun have enough money for that i tolja to neva pick that stuff up!" *thwack*) :|:|:|
(Yes, I'm a bitter and experienced shopper 😛)
