to start off, yes, i know the country of india is on the continent of asia, so yes, they are technically asian.
but many ppl i know, only consider asians to be from china, korea, japan, thailand, etc. the far east/southeast countries.

i'm white and i have a few asian friends (chinese/korean) that don't consider indian's asian.
when they say asian, they mean chinese or korean. what do you think?

edit: for the purposes of the poll, oriental will mean chinese/korean/japanese unless you guys wanna get PC on me and ppl get offended by it.

no, I'm oriental and I don't consider indian's asian

I'm half asian. I consider them Middle Eastern. I realize India is in Asia, and they are technically asian. Though I believe most people in the world (including myself) have the general idea that Asian's are Chinese, Japanese, etc etc, and Middle Eastern to be Pakistan, India, Iran, etc etc.

the middle east is in asia... heck, what is now known as the middle east was originally the near east, india was the middle east, and china/japan was the far east. somehow many far easters have tried to make the word asian apply only to themselves. that is just crap.

Why do we call Indian people 'Indian', Asian people 'Asian', but black people are 'African American' and not just 'African'?

coz African American are people who have already settled in USA for many years...gotten the citizenship, considered an american citizen,
therefore labeled as African American to differentiate between the Native "African" people from the continent of Africa.
ie. Nigeria, Egyptian, Tunisian etc...

When people talk about someone being Asian, they don't mean they are from Asia.
Sure, technically, Indians are Asian. But most people consider Asian an ethnic group, not a geographical group. And we tend to group ethnicities by what they look like.
Would you call somebody from Russia an Asian?
To most people, Asian means Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, and others with similar facial characteristics.

EDIT: just to be PC here, I'm not saying they all look alike, ok. But to us caucasians, the people of those countries share similar facial characteristics. To be honest, most caucasians can't tell which of those countries somebody is from while I would suspect that somebody native to those countries would see differences that we don't notice.

Indians and Pakistanis are seen as their own ethnic group distinct from Asians.
