I turn mine on all the time. It is the stupid idiots that don't turn theirs on when there is inclement weather even though the law in most states is that your lights be turned on in bad weather (ie RAIN for the idiots).

Daytime running lights here.. Its the law in Canada. But I turn them on manually anyway. Having the parking lights on makes the car even more visible.

Out on the highways on the prarries, head lights are a must, it makes it so much easier to judge distance for passing (on two lane roads - especially during bright sunny days). Parking lights also help - more importantly the rear ones.

On topic: My car has those automatic lights, and it even turns on the taillights for me at night. I'm so used to it that if I drive a different car I'll forget to turn the lights on/off.
