I think the question here is all around good athletes for the sport they play in.Originally posted by: hdeck

I say no. They have to be smart and they have to have a good arm, but they don't have to be good athletes to be good. No different than pitchers except for the smart thing.![]()

baseball pitchers don't run around a 100 x 50 yard field for a few hours straight. they stand in 1 spot and throw the ball to one spot.

What does "good athlete" mean anyway? All depends on your definition. If you're talking just overall fitness condition, have you ever seen a fat quarterback? If you're talking mobile, Troy Aikman is the biggest name I can think of that couldn't move out of the pocket much but had excellent accuracy and is considered a top QB in the '90s.

Arguably, nor do all quarterbacks. Jim Kelly was one of the most immobile players I have ever seen, yet most consider him a good quarterback.

Not EVERYONE can throw the ball 65 yards with accuracy, if you can do that you're a damn good ATHLETE in my book. BTW NOT EVERYONE can throw a baseball 90+mph, only ATHLETES with god given abilities can do this.
THERE ARE MANY ATHLETES, but if they are smart also (i.e. Steve Young, Joe Montana) they will go far.![]()

Good question. I guess I mean someone who is athletic: can jump high, run fast, etc...

if someone is skilled in a sport, doesn't that make them a good athlete?

In baseball, absolutely. But you take a pitcher out of baseball and put them in a sport requiring athelticism, would they be any good.
