In baseball, absolutely. But you take a pitcher out of baseball and put them in a sport requiring athelticism, would they be any good.

Yup, John Elway was a pitcher before he went to the NFL. And a dam good one too, from what I heard. He could throw 90's easy... I always wondered how Randy Johnson would do in the NFL, lineman would never be able to deflect his passes hehe... or how about Shaq as a receiver??? Jump ball, anyone??

To sum it up, pitchers are in fact still athletes... David Wells is overweight, and after his perfect game drank 27 beers in a row with D.Jeter at the bar. He may be fat, but he would blow any non MLBer away with his stuff, it's that good. (John Kruk, now he was REALLY pushing the envelope!)

I say no. They have to be smart and they have to have a good arm, but they don't have to be good athletes to be good. No different than pitchers except for the smart thing. :)

I agree. A good play maker and good throwing arm is all a QB needs. Being a good Athlete(assuming physical conditioning is what an "Athlete" is) is not necessary. However, if you define "Athlete" as one who is competitive and strategically aware, then yes, a QB must be Athletic.

if someone is skilled in a sport, doesn't that make them a good athlete?

I don't think so. The best example I can think of is Kirby Puckett. He was great at hitting the ball, but the trip around the bases was a hardship for him.

Most lineman are big, strong and very skilled at controlling other big, strong men, but not good athletes.
So his fielding ability meant nothing? I guess six gold gloves also mean nothing?

yes. if they weren't athletic they couldn't play.

Why not? Baseball pitchers can....

baseball pitchers don't run around a 100 x 50 yard field for a few hours straight. they stand in 1 spot and throw the ball to one spot.
Most pitchers don't get chased around by 300 lb. maniacs, either.

depends on your defenition of "good athlete" I think someone with a good arm = good athlete so my answer is yes.

I took it to mean athlete = mobile.

I took it to mean athlete = can take a hit by a Linebacker and still keep on playing. Let's not even talk about running away from the other team to get a good pass off..

THERE ARE MANY ATHLETES, but if they are smart also (i.e. Steve Young, Joe Montana) they will go far.:)

I would say these people would be more skilled than athletic.

I knew a guy who was competitive at every sport he ever tried. His balance was uncanny and he was very athletic. He was able to do things well with very little practice. Yet he wasn't particularily skilled at many of them.

The best example I can think of is a guy who plays (played) for the Orlando Magic named Bo Outlaw. He was always making good things happen for his team and bad things happen for the other team, but he wasn't very skilled at basketball (compared to the rest of the league). He wasn't great at offense or defense, but he was a valuable addition to the team.

Saty on topic....you are taling about SKILL..your question was about athleticism....

Bo Outlaw is one of the more athletic forwards in the league. I dunno what you're smoking... he has great defense, can defend, block shots, and rebound... offensively he isn't as polished but he gets enough putbacks from his athletic ability

Linemen are great athletes...however, I think you have your 'version' of athlete you are considering.

Most athletes cannot cross sports or even positions easily....you have a few 'super' athletes that can do baseball, football, basketball...etc but that is rare and usually they only become mediocre players in the other sport (mediocre still being a pretty high mark).

Marathon runners are great athletes as are Heavy Wieght boxers....however that marathon runner will smoke the boxers on the track, and well, let's just say it wouldn't be pretty if that runner decided to slap on some gloves one day and step in the ring....
