Do you know the story behind Diet Coke? Pepsi was gaining market share on Coke in the 70s, because people preferred its taste. So Coke came up with Diet Coke, and they formulated it to taste closer to Pepsi to try to win back market share. It backfired. Diet coke started stealing market share from regular Coke. People were drinking it not because it was diet, but because it tasted better. So Coke decided to reformulate regular Coke to taste more like Diet Coke. Taste tests showed that people PREFERRED the new formula. They released it as a replacement for regular Coke, and people flipped out. Suddenly the new stuff tasted worse.

It's all mental. People hate diet sodas not because of the taste, but because of the word diet on the label.

I disagree. Most diet sodas that I've had have tasted like ass to me. Diet Coke especially. I really don't have anything against diet... some are good, but most are pretty bad IMO. For example... Fresca is diet by default and I love that. Diet root beer is also good.

Coke Zero > Diet Coke
Coke Zero tastes like watered-down Coke while Diet Coke has a distinct taste from regular Coke.

Well taste is all subjective, and you're right it is affected by popular opinion among other factors. However, I don't think its just the word diet, its more of the taste being different (coming from regular soft drinks).

Personally, I don't like the taste of any sugar replacement products, so all the diet stuff tastes bad for me, regardless of the label.

Sprite zero tastes good because it has a mix of Aspartame and Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K).

Personally I prefer Diet 7Up over Sprite zero, though it has a similar mix of sweeteners.
