Guys, have no clue if I enabled ACHI before I installed W7 in this system. Is it necessary to?

I am getting nauseous a little.

OK good. Firmware update in hand. Via Crucial guy in chat. Was updated Mar 25 this year to MU05. Wutevah that is. Up to date firmware crucial. No pun intended.

http://www.crucial.com/support/firmware.aspx

Looks like serious stuff:

Release Date: 03/25/2014
Firmware for the M500 (all form factors) is being updated from version MU03 to MU05. The M500 is updateable to this new firmware starting from previous versions using tools provided by Micron.
This update will be mandatory cut-in for new product built in Micron factories, and is an OPTIONAL update for any drive in the field. For end users, it is recommended if the user is experiencing or wishes to prevent an issue related to the following items.
Version MU05 includes the following changes:

  • Improved Drive latency performance in applications with SMART polling
  • Improved Compatibility with 3rd party encryption management software
  • Corrected Reporting of SMART attribute 196 and 183
  • Increased thermal throttling response on 960GB Capacity for greater reliability
  • Corrected Upgrade issues experienced on MU03 by some custome

Do you also manually allocate your own memory? :p

Re the unfathomable, infinitely wondrous modules in my brain---infinite channel modules, warpspeed, no lagging in seek time....I am in total trust and awe of nature.:sneaky:

Please try to stop being intolerant and boorishly judgmental. It is in no way justified here, and it reflects nothing constructive, healthy or laudable. In any event, in any human arena. EVAH.

That is completely uncalled for. I made a joke w/ respect to OS automated processes, of which TRIM is usually one, in response to your own joke with regards to taking out your own garbage.

What is your problem?

I rest my case.

I get paid to have an uncommonly good "ear"....."humor" in its specifics speaks a great deal. It's case specific.

But, was good that in yr rush to judgement you missed the reality of one of my links and took responsibility for that. See, that was healthy.

I can feel, under it all, you wanna help. But I stand by what I posted.

1)"I use an SSD as my desktop Boot Drive but keep my data on a Mechanical Drive"
2)"If I could afford a big enough SDD, I would use it as a stand alone drive"

These two poll options are overlapping. People can fall into both categories. I'm assuming if people fall in both categories you want them to select the second option, but that is not very clear.

Yes, U R absolutely right.

As I said somewhere in this increasingly voluminous thread, not only was this my first poll attempt, I was only moved to it AFTER having started the thread without one, and after a couple members posted. So, I was in a rush. I also changed the title after discovering we could do polls and doing one. As I said, I should have enabled multiple choice, exactly for the reasons you suggest! And, this being new and my being in a rush for the reasons stated....I just did not.

Hope this clears things up.

Boring diary update, feign interest:

I am preparing for the arrival of the new puppy.

I now have Piggy, my WD Black 500GBs, down to well under 100GBs occupied.:D

Just hadda convert & burn some DVDs I had ripped from my commercial ones (clearly, big files) to blank media to give to friends so they don't loose my originals. Which, used to happen.

So, when I migrate to the new puppy, it will have as much free space as possible re any 240GB SS puppy. And TRIM can run around invisibly with greater ease, cleaning up its little poos.... and keep it happy, healthy and clean.():)

I am gettin excited.:)

PS: my backup drive don show up cause, as usual, I put it to sleep via the singular Revosleep after booting in to my WD. It's not spinning, not drawing power. It's SLEEPING.

How deep did you have to dig in the internal mud for this one, William? Have you nothing better to do?

The way it works: I have huge library of DVDs.....I only get the best Editions, the ones with the good bonus material. Get them used but in good condition, mostly on Amazon, sometimes ebay as well. Never once had a problem, saved a fortune over time.

Given, when I used to lend these to friends, they would often go missing, I evolved good strategy: I do exactly what I said, and always burn a given thing to a DVD-RW.

The agreement is the RWs get returned (they mostly do); I then put them in the burn over pile and there we have it.

No giving permanent copies to keep of anything to anyone.

And William, Tweet me when the Vatican approves your sainthood. That would be the day after the Pope's wedding.

It's your story...

U bet it is!!!! And accurate in every element.
Edit: And. my story with PICS!!!!():) See below!!!!

AND, cause I only use RWs for this (saves a ton of money)......what I do is put an index card in every jewel box--- I get the big, clear ones on ebay.....and write the current title in pencil on the index card, so it, along with the disk, can be erased when I get it back. Obviously, the infinite burn overs to the RWs preclude writing anything on the disks themselves.

Very neat, perfectly pragmatic system. Works for all involved. When, of course, we are not all out robbing 7-11s, stealing smart phones and selling crack and guns.:sneaky:

In FACT, this past Xmas, one friend gave me a little spindle of Vebatim RWs! I thought that rocked.

Be healthy, be happy, William.:)

Tiny part of my library...I have things from the silent days to most recent.

And below, the best Edition of WALL STREET: 2 disks, one only bonus material; 20th Anniversary Edition, the Best.
2exr2w1.jpg

Naturally, have the 5 disk box set of all Godfathers including one disk all bonus material....TWO editions of Silence of the Lambs, cause different bonus material on each.

Have every screwball comedy made in the 30s, etc. I am very proud of this now huge library.

Preciate yr interest, William.

Now....time to go out and do some shoplifting.

Every system I own has a minimum of a single stand-alone SSD drive, any non-mobile devices have 2 SSDs in RAID0 minimum, I don't store any media on any systems except for a file server in the house. SSDs are cheap enough and large enough that there's no reason to ever have HDDs in anything except a file server at this point.

Guys, nobody said in this whole thread, but I got I needed to activate ACHI. So, I delved, found what I should do to modify the registry......changed the value of the key (see below) form 3 to 0.

Was that right thing to do? Someone savvy in this pls say.

Haven't rebooted yet, but will now.

I just don want any problems later where I then have to start troubleshooting

Guys, I am confused and need help. First, re the above re if I did the right thing re the registry changing the value of that key.

But, I rebooted, went into bios....and I did not realize I had bullet in RAID. I don do RAID, never set up RAID never will.

Pls tell me where I should now move the bullet. To the top one? Auto detect AHCI?

MANY THANKS. Pls see below. Thank God I delved and learned I hadda do stuff before the puppy arrives.

You want raid autodetect ahci. If you have more than one hd later you will need ahci.

You had to change bios to ahci. If you had Windows installed in ide mode then you would not get the full effect of your ssd.

May the Cybergod bless U!

But, I plan to retain my internal backup strategy....Use either this WD Black or my current backup HDD as backup to the new SSD. I do new clone from main drive to backup drive once a week, set up dual boot using Easy BCD.

Pls tell me, will this change still afford that?

THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN!!!!:D

It should not. I have 3 hd's and my bios is set to ahci. I can reach every drive as long as they are formatted properly for the os that you are using. For example my main drive is ntfs so Windows can see it. My second hd is also ntfs. My third is Linux partition so Windows won't see it.

I mean it. I am small but I give fierce, giant hugs.:D

Yes, I always do ntfs. And, I am not up to Linux yet.():)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!

K....now see, that....was not a good experience.:|

I moved the bullet, got the warning: U wanna do this fool? Cause if U do, you may render yr system unbootable and U will be very sorry u did this!

I went, Don be paranoidl!!!!

But then, system would not boot and I got BSOD (see below) and hadda power off power on, change the bullet back to where it was in the bios.

U think my mother is doing this cause I got the SSD even tho this WD Black is very fast?:sneaky:

Sigh. Wut is going on here? Should I have not changed the value of that reg key?
