Libertarians match the GOP platform more than the Democrat one. Democrats are usually odd man out on the major issues. The GOP candidate has the best chance of being elected, so if you prefer the Libertarian ticket, you might as well vote Republican to get your issues passed:

MINORITY ISSUES: Would you prefer your candidate support or oppose such legislation as affirmative action?3. What stance would you like your candidate to adopt?

    • Support increased prosecution and penalties Bush, Gore
      Neither
      Support decriminalization Harry Browne
    7. GAY RIGHTS: Some candidates believe that sexual orientation is an unchangeable characteristic and support across the board equality under civil law for gay and lesbian Americans. On the other end of the spectrum, some believe that gay relationships are a destructive assault on the heterosexual, marriage-based family. What policies would you like your candidate to favor?

    • Support legislative equality for homosexuals. Gore
      Neither
Oppose special legislationconcerning homosexuality. Bush, Harry Browne
    8. EDUCATION: Some presidential candidates support school choice. Others see it as a separation of church and state issue. What position would you like your candidate to support?9. ENVIRONMENT: Which position regarding the environment would your ideal candidate advocate?

    • Support the environment only after considering market and private property concerns. Bush
      Neither Harry Browne
      Support environmental protection legislation Gore
    10. EVOLUTION VS. CREATIONISM: Some presidential candidates favor the teaching of Creationism in public schools along evolution which is currently taught in science classes. What's your opinion?

    • Support the situation as it is now: evolution only Gore
      Neither Harry Browne
Support legislation including the teaching of Creationism Bush
    11. FOREIGN POLICY: Would you prefer your candidate embrace an non-interventionist or interventionist approach to foreign policy?12. Neither Harry Browne
Oppose legislation of "traditional values". Gore
    15. SOCIAL SECURITY: Would you prefer your candidate promise to preserve or reform (including dismantle) Social Security?16. Everyone is screwed because they don't abide by the most important issue:

"Regardless of increases or decreases, it is vitally important that federal spending and taxes are balanced. "

What this has done is encourage irresponsibility and lack of standing up to though issues by either party. They are the same. You sracth my back, 'I'll scratch yours. They money in politics sickens me.

And as long as the bottom 1/2 can vote to pick the pockets of the upper 1/2, there will not be a balanced budget.

If you think that's what is happening I feel sorry for you. Check how much of the federal budget gets funneled to the bottom 50%. It might surpise. The transfer of weath is decideingly one direction. Bottom up.

Whens the last time a republican has proposed elimination of the income tax? I hear it all the time on capital gains.

Ccapital gains is NOT just a rich persons tax cut. I am in the bottom rung of the tax bracket and this would benifit me greatly. I have been putting money away for many years all going into stocks. Now I can't afford to sell them cause it would kill me at tax time. If I was able to sell some right now I would. Even when I was laid off for a couple of months I would not touch it. I came close but luckily I found a job. But there are some things my family needs right now but I just can't afford to sell since for one it would put me in a higher tax bracket and two you still get taxed on the earnings twice.

This reminds me fo a disscussion I once had with Amused.

Say the tax rate was 50% on anything above $100,000 annual income and only 5% on income 0-100K.

You are offered two jobs, one that pays 250K, the other pays 80K. Which can you "afford" to take?

Welcome to the club. You are middle class, you have no lobbiest in washington working to give you a sweet contract/free land or tax break, you/we/me are too busy working/distracted to read the 55,000 page tax code, so we pay more as a percentage and get little in return.

We will have to disagree. We do agree however that the tax code needs to be completely reworked.

The problem is not democrats and republicans, it's the polarized, two-party system that limits voters choices to the lesser of two evils instead of the party they actually want to vote for.

I will take the problems of a 2 party system over the chaotic swings of a 5 party system.
A 3 or more party system all but guarantees tyrany of the minority.

You really ought to link to another one then. I didn't read that whole thing because the first example regarding the inheritence tax is way off. This actually hurts middle-class more than anyone else, they are the ones who have to sell off family businesses in many instances because they can't afford to inherit them. And guess who then buys up those businesses? Upper-class people who are already rich, and now they can make even more money.
