While I am in general opposed to the legitimization and even glorification of the gay lifestyle, I don't feel that this is something that should be legislated on a federal level, let alone added to the Constitution. If this should be legislated at all, and I don't think it should, it should be left to the states to decide.

Why would you be accused of being gay by simply walking into a bar? Unless I misunderstood your post.
 
What I find really troubling is that this boils down to a civil rights issues (make homosexuality a variable.. X...) .. The government is officially saying that X should not be married.. That is horrible and shows how truly progressive this country is... If there was a protest, my gf and I would be there fighting for OUR rights as people, not as gay/straight/asexual or whatever...

I wouldn't call it a wide social problem, unless you've done a survey and have some numbers. People are more accepting (enlightened) these days IMO.

I saw a commedian the other day that did a thing on homophobia.

She was saying that on the news they talked about people beating up gays and labelled them as homophobes.

Then she said that she knows lots of people that are arachanphobes (afraid of spiders). But they don't go looking for spiders, or beat and smash spiders, or pick fights with spiders. When they see a spider they go the other way.

So maybe a more technical term for people that beat up gays would be *ssholes.

Yeah homophobes would mean they're afraid of gays... people that beat up gays aren't homophobes, they're just macho redneck assholes who are insecure with their own sexuality and have a pea for a brain.
 
From a religious point of view, people can be against it....but the government has no right interfering in this kind of thing.

I have No Problem with Gay Marriages, but I think they SHOULD be Outlawed in the Constitution

A little Declaration of Independence for y'all...

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

I have absolutely no problem with gay marriage and I don't think the government has the right to dictate this part of a citizen's life.

I voted for:

"I am against Gay Marriages, but I do NOT think the Constitution should be Amended."


While personally I don't think gay marriages are right... I must say that I don't feel a constitutional amendment is in order.

I wouldn't neccessarily be against state laws... but then we'd have to have a balance between pro-gay-marriage and anti-gay-marriage states, and whenever we added a new state we'd have to come up with compromises to keep that balance, and it'd probably just lead to another civil war and that would be lame. 😉
 
Don't read into this, because I'm not implying anything. I was just wondering if siblings can legally marry? Has the government taken a stand on incest?
 
I'll probably get flamed for this, but here goes.

Gay marriages are not ok. Marriage is a religious concept and whether you are allowed to marry is dictated by your church or whatever group you belong to. If you try to tell the Catholic church that you want a gay marriage and they say no, that's too damn bad, you have no legal rights to have a Catholic marriage then. I've never gotten how someone can be a devout (Christian/Jew/Muslim/etc) and still say they are homosexual when it is prohibited by their religion. Um, sorry, but you can't have both.

Now on the other hand I don't think homosexuals should be denied the same rights under a civil union as any other person. If two people decided to live together and gain the same legal benefits a married couple has under the law, that should be no problem no metter what their sexual orientation. They should still have those rights, but it will not be a marriage.

Depends on what state you live in.

No closer that first cousins, at any rate.

How can the government tell you that you can't marry your cousin, or even your sister? If they are two consenting adults, how can the government step in?
