Professor Apologizes for Test Question

BELLEVUE, Wash. (April 20) - A community college math instructor has apologized for a test question invoking Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that students complained was racially insensitive.

Peter Ratener, 60, who has taught at Bellevue Community College for more than 25 years, said Wednesday night at a trustees meeting that the question on an exam last month was an "egregious mistake."

It began, "Condoleezza holds a watermelon just over the edge of the roof of the 300-foot Federal Building, and tosses it up with a velocity of 20 feet per second." The question then asked students to determine when the watermelon would hit the ground.

The Board of Trustees condemned the wording as insulting to Rice, who is black, because of caricatures of blacks eating watermelon during the days of plantation slavery.

Ratener said the question originally referred to Gallagher, a one-named comedian who smashed watermelons as part of his act, and that he changed it to Condoleezza because she was more recognizable and because he likes the name.

A number of Seattle-area black community leaders demanded Ratener be fired or disciplined.

"Apologies have been made, but where is the atonement?" said James Kelly, president of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle.

College President Jean Floten said action would be initiated against Ratener under a section of the faculty contract that covers punishment, such as a reprimand or suspension, but not termination.

Everything is racial insensitivity nowadays, you got my vote to ban all test questions, forever.

oh and I voted No

If anyone has a problem with that, they should get a little tougher. If it was Tyrone instead of Condoleeza, would it still be racist? I mean.. Tyrone is a 'black' name.. but it is much more common.

Nope.....doesn't offend me. I find it quite funny................

I can see where some may be offended though....

The day someone finally stands up and tells <insert offended ethnic group here> community leaders to STFU when they start yammering about crap like this race relations in the US will take a quantum leap forward.

Bill Cosby did it. Didn't help anything. White people stood around and nodded, everyone else crucified him.

WTF is wrong with these people besides wanting their 15 minutes of fame. They should change names to The Borg until the borg races comes around then they would be protesting

Is the fact that most ATOT members are white or asian the explanation for their tolerance of racism and racist based behavior?

No, because it was funny.
It'd still be funny if it were Dubya throwing a jar of mayonnaise off the edge of the building. Same "insensitivity" but because everything has to be 110% politically correct these days, it's labelled as racist.
I can take "white jokes" perfectly well, because they're funny. White guys can't dance, jump or look anything other than daft when listening to hip-hop, and like mayonnaise. It's not racist, it's just funny.

Those crucifying him are the same so called "community leaders" that always get all the media attention. From the rare press article that actually looks into what he is doing a little deeper they report that what he is saying is resonating with the people the message is actually aimed at.

The only racism I see is the automatic assumption that any time watermelon and blacks are mentioned at the same time the assumption is that there is a racial angle involved. To mangle a line from Freud somtimes a watermelon is just a watermelon.

I find it quite funny, and I would continue to find it funny with anyone's name, because throwing a watermelon, ESPECIALLY off of the Federal Buliding, is hilarious.

unbelievable...

then again, why would you think of making a math problem with condolezza rice and a watermelon?

Maybe because "Ratener said the question originally referred to Gallagher, a one-named comedian who smashed watermelons as part of his act, and that he changed it to Condoleezza because she was more recognizable and because he likes the name. "

Just stupid. To anyone who voted yes, explain to me why you stereotype yourself or others as eating watermelons and being slaves. That's just wrong, and until you stop you are just holding yourself down and beating yourself up. Ah well, it will never end, I just have high hopes I guess.

Notice the wanting atonement or payback. It's not enough for whitey to make a mistake. We have to crush him and ruin his life because of it too.
