Honestly, if this guy didn't realize the trouble he'd get in for writing a question like that, he's way too stupid to be teaching.

Why? To repeat what I posted a page or so back hard as it might be for you to believe there are people who don't immediately associate watermelons with blacks negatively or positively. Most people don't spend the majority of their time obsessing over race and whether or not every syllable they utter will pass some kind of sensitivity test.

I'm offended that people are offended.
And I am offended by that.

Ok I am offended that you would get offended over someone taking offence to others being offended. So what if someone gets offended over others being offended, it's none of your damn busines. :|

GodDAMN that offends me. :|
You'd better watch your back sunshine, or I'll be callin' you a racist swine.

And those people shouldn't be teachers.

Did they overreact? Definitely. Was it a smart move to write such a question? No, because the reaction to it was so predictable.

Fvckin' right they SHOULD be teachers. Teachers TEACH PUPILS, they don't examine every phrase they utter for possible racist remarks. They're there to impart knowledge; who gives a flying fvck how they do that, so long as the pupils LEARN?

Difficult to avoid if your mind doesn't work that way. I, for example, honestly had no idea about the association of watermelon with black people.

Then again, as I already said, I would have left it as Gallagher with a watermelon, or changed it to Condoleezza (which, BTW, really is a cool name) and something to do with crude oil.

I wonder what all "anti pc" people would be saying if it was an Asian woman holding a fried cat or a Jew holding a bag of money.

Or white trash living in a trailer park? Get over yourself.

Really this crap is getting out of hand. Too many people force the race issue in situations now. It would never hold up in court because everything is circumstantial. The question quotes as "Condoleezza," not "Condoleezza Rice."

It's just stupid and anyone offended should just kill themselves because the world is much harsher than a stupid test question.

It's forced racism at best, forced by those fools that are offended by it.

Do you see a lot of black people in trailer parks? No. Hence, "white trash".

Do you hear a lot of blacks that you can actually understand? No. Hence, "ebonics".

It all evens out in the end.

They shouldn't be teaching because their entire worldview doesn't revolve around race to the point of obsession? Actually they are exactly the people who should be teaching, maybe they can pass it on.

Actually, this is much stupider. I know better than to use the "N word" ever; therefore, I also know better than to use any word that sounds like it. I'd like to think that my vocabulary is good enough that I could find a synonym. That is an easy sh!tstorm to avoid.

But suppose you're a professor sitting at home late at night trying to rewrite last semester's exam for tomorrow, and you think "who the 'F' knows who Gallagher is anymore?" You might change the name, too, to, oh, say a cool and unique name like Condoleezza. At the same time, the idea of a watermelon going splat still amuses you, so you leave that part of the question alone. I just can't assume malice in this case.

People can choose to be offended by this or not depending on cultural background. The prof should have seen it coming and showed insensitivity.
Hell, my name is Gallagher, I am not offended by either version of the problem. But I am not black.
And if Gallagher throws a watermelon up in the air, is he making fun of black people?
Or is he making fun of all the Gallaghers. Should I be offended?

Everything is racial insensitivity nowadays, you got my vote to ban all test questions, forever.

oh and I voted No

Is the fact that most ATOT members are white or asian the explanation for their tolerance of racism and racist based behavior?

Ask yourself: If the question had Jeb throwing an empty bottle of hootch off of his 15 foot tall mobile home, would it be funny? Why, yes it would

Other ethnic groups laugh at white jokes. But the SECOND a "racist" joke is laughed at, BAM, suddenly the man is putting you down. Double standard FTW.

But did he really have to use a watermelon? After all, he did change the name...
