Yes, I can. After a 5 minute lesson with my car saleman, I was off in my new Mustang. I never had a lesson before that. It's not hard, but it will take 3-4 weeks before you will be good at it.

Evidenced by the fact that Mercedes doesn't offer manuals on most models (esp AMGs) here in the US. They do in Europe though! ARGH

This is why I'll never buy an E-class as nice as that car is. Audi RS6 here I come (one day....hopefully). Actually for me I'd be happy with an M3, I think the smaller the better.

BTW, I would never feel comfortable driving an automatic. They like to take engine breaking away from you to save fuel. Some of the better automatics will give you some engine breaking when it senses that you are driving agressively (or in Tiptronic mode), but that doesn't really cut it for me. That coasting feeling just doesn't feel safe or comfortable.

Our family grew from 3 to 5 so our 2-door manual didn't cut it. Now it's a 4-door automatic. *sigh* I miss drivin' that stick... :(

Yep, it's what I learned to drive with.

Me too. My kids will have to show me they have mastered a stick shift before I'll even consider letting them get behind the wheel of an automatic.
Uh, WHY???

I can stall a stickshift...
I can launch a stickshift...
I can't really DRIVE a stickshift...

Guess that's what I get for only trying once...

because we get to do it in the mountain roads too, where it's 100x more fun =] i don't mind it in the city as long as the clutch is light

oh and cellphones aren't an option for me, i'd rather drive

in that case you should vote "no". get it ? you can only vote yes if you actually have done it and that means something like at least a 5 miles drive with multiple stops and junctions and not having almost killed someone and/or yourself and/or cause an accident. If you say yes it's a kind of like a virgin saying he had sex cause he knows what to do in theory.

I just walked in during monday lunchtime-ish, and told the dealer "I want to test drive a WRX, and even though I want a stick, I have to test drive the automatic"

I guess he was bored or something, because he told me to give him 30 minutes and he'll teach me. So he took me to an empty street and we spent 30 minutes on a brand new WRX learning stick.

Not much of test drive though, considering i didnt know what I was doing. But i had a pretty good time.

that doen't answer the question if you know or not. You had a 30 minutes lesson, but depending on your speed of learning you may or may not know how to drive a manual after this lesson. I think the test should be if you could pass a driving test in a manual car, which usually includes a 15 minute drive in various traffic situations. If you only had this one 30 minutes non-professional unpaid lesson, I would guess you will NEVER EVER pass a physical driving test (even in rural wisconsin where it's a cakewalk), so the reality is YUO DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE STICK , and if you said yes in the poll you lied (and if you keep lying to yourself you might end up in a hospital after an accident cause you thought you know how to drive after one lesson).

I rekkon half the people that said yes would not pass a driving test in a manual car, therefore their answer should be counted as no as in "can't drive a manual", so this means that the majority unfortunately can't. Sad cause manual version of a car is cheaper, has better gas mileage, has more power and affords more contorl to the driver.

I drive a manual.

Sometimes, when driving other people's cars though, I might bog the engine until i get used to their clutch, because every clutch is a little different

The poll proves that 57% can't drive stick - that is 17% that admit it plus half the people that claim they can (80%) but really can't, so we've 40% + 17% = 57%. Sad . People the poll question means "can you pass a driving license test in a manual car?", and not "can you figure out how to get a manual car from your garage to the street without having to restart it more than 5 times, and avoiding hitting the trash cans and other stuff on the sidewalk ?". Maybe 80% can answer yes to the second question, but definetly not the first.
