ok lets rephrase that, Texas doesnt have the babes of baywatch

<< part of Texas belonged to Mexico this is true until Mexico raised Taxes on Settlers and told them they could not marry Mexican Women. >>

Actually, the settlers of what is modern day Texas refused to pay taxes to Mexico because they felt they didn't fall under Mexican sovreignty. IIRC, the first Texas settlers had no problem living in Texas under Mexican authority and even abided by the no-slave law put in place by Mexico at the time. It wasn't until later, when slave-holding settlers came to Texas and didn't like the fact they couldn't keep slaves in the Mexican owned portion of Texas. Thus the later settlers declared indepenance from Mexico and petitioned to become part of the Union.

The reason why it was a rogue indepenance was Congress didn't want to add another slave state to the union, thus upsetting the balance of free states and slave states. So for a time Texas was it's own country but not by choice.

<< And there were Many Texan-Mexicans that fought with the "white settlers" during the war. >>

Of course, the Texan-Mexicans wanted to free themselves from the corrupt frontier-Mexican government.

<< You also left out the fact that the reason white settlers moved in was becase the MExican Army did not want to fight the Commanche and Apache Indians. >>

Fair enough, just one more reason why the settlers wanted independence; to gain US military protection.

Never been to Texas, but most of those I know from Texas seem to think it's pretty good.

California has it's pluses and it's minuses. For every great place there is another that sucks bad. It has great weather but way to many people living there because of the great weather. It's population is probably more diversified than any other state in the nation but because of that we do have large pockets of area's where racial tensions run high. The Coast is a wonderful place top visit, especially around the Monterey Bay. San Francisco is another great place to visit.. if you can handle the culture shock and the foggy days in the Summer. LA is a Parking Lot and the Bay Area has to be one of the most over priced areas in the country. What once use to be a great place to live is now a mass of humanity trying to pretend the the quality of life there is still good.

If I lived in Colorado, Oregon or anywhere else that wasn't too crowded and had nice scenery (as in Mountains) I don't think you could pay me enough to move back to Ca. It was a great place once but like all good things, others found about it and the quality has greatly diminished..kind of like this Forum

Azraele, in regards to this:

<< If you want my personal preference, I can easily say that I wouldn't choose Texas. I lived there for a year (Arlington), and it just wasn't the state for me. The hot weather and pollution made me miserable. >>

That is easy to explain. You weren't in the right part of Texas. It is a commonly held belief by those of us who weren't raised in "North Texas" aka Dallas county and southern Collin county area that the area you are refering to is not a part of Texas. It is commonly refered to as occupied north Texas. This area has a very high number of imigrants from the New England area and that affects the area tremendously. You want to see true Texas, go to Tyler, Amarillo, Odessa/Midland, Big Spring, etc. Go to the smaller towns, or even San Antonio (Houston and Austin are almost as bad as Dallas, at least thats what I've heard). So, on the part of Texans, I apologize for your bad experience.

By the way, I have nothing wrong with anyone from New England. The people from there who live in Texas just have a different way of doing things that don't reflect the way the majority of the state do. Not necessarily wrong, just different. Then again, Texas is so big that it is basically five or six different regions all doing things their own way. Makes for a nice hodgepodge of experience, which is one of the reasons Texas is such a great state. 😀
