I have had Knology cable since it was built in my area. I am getting about 1Mbit on a regular basis. I guess I should say that I get it for free since I am one of their Data Technicians

Road Runner from TimeWarner, here in the STNY (Southern Tier New York)
Works well, noticed Serious slow downs in the past 6 mo. and the Upload
Cap was lowered to about 60k/s (from around 120k/s) while DL remains decently quick on most
days, peak times I do see some lag....

I'm waiting to see what DSL service there is when it's avalible, so far
cable is it for broadband... but for $37 a mo. it should be better, or
rather, be like it was when I signed on 2.5 years ago....

I've had dsl for about 1.5-2.0 years. IN canada at 9000 feet. I could get up to 6 mbit but they only give me 1.5 mbit. I have abut 0.540 mbit up.

AT&T@Home cable in Denver CO

They still haven't set up my user account correctly though (after 1 1/2 months!). Its a mystery to them that I can even access the internet. Just as long as they never bill me. :p

DSL from Qwest (formerly US West) and I've had it for one year now.
Some people have had major problems with this service...I haven't luckily.
I think I'm right on the edge of their loop carrier, which explains my slow speed.

While I should be getting 640k I only get 256k. Then again I'm only paying 30 bucks a month (I get 20 dollars off since my university pays the ISP fees).

I hear people using covad and rhythms get a lot faster (up to 1.5mbps). Sprint ION users get even more but they have to wait about 2 months to get everything installed.

I know this is much better than what you poor 56k users out there have, but I kinda feel I'm getting jipped. I think I'm just too greedy :)

Wow Adul, I didn't know you lived in Phoenix :)

In my part of Phoenix (Glendale area), I'm still waiting for better net access (56k dialup is really starting to suck; especially when every one of your friends has better net access than you, and to top it all off, they never use their computers!). Cox@Home has been making promises for the last 3 years and finally there's guys digging trenches in the road. I talked to them and yes, they are indeed installing fiber optic cabling. Geesh, about damn time! They should they should have the service up (along with Cox Digital TV) sometime in Q1 2001. Yeah, yeah, we'll see what happens....

I'm in Israel. ADSL just went commercial a week ago, but It'll be a month before I can get it where I'm at, and it's REALLY slow. It took them about a year to fight with the government (They didn't want to do unbundling, but they were eventually forced to do it).

The infrastructure for Cable is ready in my city, but the Cable companies are still waiting for permission from the ministery of communication. My friends who are on an expirement w/ the Cable company here report 612KB\S Download, and just 128KB\S Upload. Better than virtually nothing, I S'ppose.

<< Optimum Online in NY since 98, 10Mb down, 1Mb up >>

Curious, cuz my Sis works for Cablevision and lots of my Customers have Opt. service
and they have capped the upload at 128k/s...
it used to be Unbeleiveably fast in both directions, 1Mb+ Upload would be my guess
but people were abusing it....

Ever since the modem "upgrade" they made, it's also been harder to network, no more
easy plug into hub and get 2 IP's without paying extra.... which sux cuz now I need
to make a dedicated server for my parent's house, they have a few PC's and printers
which now only one can go one the net at a time (don't wanna use Gateway software
and so far the Hubs haven't impressed me.)....

ADSL on the first business day of the year 2000. I was one of the first in my country to get it. :D :D
And I my bills were actually lower than those I had for dialup. Dialup seems so .... wrong, now. :D

The pathetic thing is that I live in the middle of a medium sized city , and there is no broadband access where I live, and there still won't be any in the next two years. There is a SLIGHT possibility that DSL will be available in 2002, but considering the fact that there are absolutely ZERO phone lines available here (approximately 10% of the homes in our neighborhood don't have phones because they can't get them due to lack of wires) and the phone company still refuses to install a new Access Point to provide new lines, I find it highly unlikely that it will be broadband here any time before the end of the next Millennium... :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

As bad as that is, the part that annoys me even more is that the AT&T people keep knocking on our doors and ringing our phones to get us to buy their Digital Cable TV subscriptions, but they REFUSE to flip the switch (I have talked with several of their techs who know what they are talking about, and that is pretty much all ALL that they would have to do since the local system already supports broadband) to allow Cable Modem access here, and when I asked the regional manager about it, he said that it's not going to happen until at least 70% of the homes have purchased Cable TV...like that's ever going to happen... :| :| :| :| :|

I'm pretty sure that's against the law. Phone service is a utility and must be provided. I don't think the company really has a choice in the matter. Broadband is another story, but your neighbors should consider a lawsuit.

I have had @home cable in sacramento CA for 2 months now. email went down once for a couple hours, and a few weeks ago I went completely down for 8 days before they got a tech out here to fix it! Even then it went on before the techs came that day. their customer service lost my first request and they keep calling me spamming me to signup even though I mention I already signed up.

my ping fluctuates badly and online gaming can be a pain. Speed can really slow down in the evening but atleast its still faster than dialup. as far as the ping its the craziest thing. they tell me on the phone my ping is really bad in my area and I could request somebody to come out or not to see whats wrong but that is my choice so they don't monitor it on their own and just send people out????

so a bad taste is in my mouth. 8 days no access is complete bs.

before that I had dsl in stockton, ca. for 9 months and after hookup I only had a few days total downtime during a couple storms or something. You call the number and know outages are listed. Those times I just came back up, and never got word from them their was a problem or what to do about it so I just waited them out. I found the speed more constant and it was awesome for online gaming.

I live in southeast Wisconsin (Kenosha mailing addy but actually in a little township called Bristol). Kenosha just got cable internet access and Bristol is next. First quarter 2001. I'm hoping for early January. DSL is available in some areas in Kenosha through Ameritech. I have GTE (verizon) in Bristol and they have to have the worst phone lines in the world. I get a whopping 19.2k connect no matter what access, modem, or tweak I use (line verifies not 56k compatible).

Needless to say, I am salivating for cable.

I love my 4 hour downloads (drivers) that crap out after 90% and don't resume. That's when I drive to work after hours and tap that T1 and get it in 6 minutes.

I started w/ ADSL from Ameritech (aka the Devil) in March 2000 and was fairly impressed with the speed improvement and availability of SyGating it to my other nodes in my house. But then my modem went on the fritz in late August and Ameritech gave me nearly a month of runaround (cancelling tech support orders, saying it was my fault, all the usual stuff). Finally the guy came out in September and just gave me a whole new Modem, software, NIC (that used PPoE rather than ATM, i was pleased) and everything was peachy again.

but i became dissatisfied w/ only 750kbps transfer rates and got Cable from Media One. to date, i'm quite pleased.

On a completely unrelated note, would anyone like to purchase a brand new ADSL modem? (j/k)

Rob

EDIT - oh yea, i live in Beverly Hills, MI, which is a suburb of Detroit. don't know the distance i was from the Central Station for DSL, but my potential max throughput (i looked over the tech's shoulder as he was checking the line) was about 1.6mbps. So i was pretty close

Stringy, the technical upload cap is 1Mbit/s, theoretically allowing 128KBytes/s. Although this is rarely acheived, I get 100KB+ and often into 120KB+. True there used to be no upload cap, except the 10Mb limitation of the modems, I easily uploaded at 500K about a year ago. But then they switched to "docsis" and capped us and started advertising like mad on TV to attract dialupers who think AOL _is_ the internet. But, back to the point, 1Mb upload cap, which is still pretty good since @home is 128Kbits/s.

St. Paul, MN, was the first person in MN to have Cable, got it over 3 years ago. Less then 2,000 feet from cable company, get about 250-350k/sec. Great cable modem.
