I'm suprised that the Network Nazis at RH71's workplace haven't shut off his network port for "abuse of corporate network resources" or something equally silly sounding 🙂

My roommate was running BitTorrent and it completely killed our internet speeds. My other roommates wouldn't notice but I noticed it surfing the web all the time. Ping times woudl go from 80's to 600's. My solution to the problem was to run a packet sniffer on the network and just kill all his BitTorrent packets for about 5 minutes...it'd usually be good for lilke 20 minutes after that. Good thing that kid moved out....

That's the thing with bitTorrent/Kazaa/DC... they KILL your ping times. It's impossible to play CS and leave programs like that running.

It isn't a matter of believing it... lol.. It's a fact.

Even when you're downloading something, you still have to send ACK(knowledge) packets back to them.

If your upload stream is completely saturated, it's going to slow things down considerably.

Why didn't you just ask him about the high pings?

this happens to me with any program. seems to just be an effect that broadband with upload limits has. as you approach your upstream limit, the download speeds fall tremendously. mine usually stablize around 15KB/sec both ways. With no upload, I can download at 150KB+/sec.

The same thing happens with Dialup, too..

Like I said, even when you're downloading.. you are still uploading. If your upload stream is completely saturated, your download speed will suffer.

Just watch it sometime when you're only downloading. Depending on the speed, each download takes >0.5 - 2k/sec of upload bandwidth.

wtf is bittorrent?

Basically it is a file sharing program that runs over http but can DL from multiple sources at once. Basically, some one seeds a file(posts it) and by clicking on it IE will open and save it as a file. The good part is that it is a resumable file.

A certain Anime compilation should be done when i get home tonight.

You gotta help out the people who are still working on the file, at least try to upload as much as you download.

Leech. :|

Uploading is still required, and some people would like to browse with a certain modicum of speed.

I think it totally depends on where you go for your tv eps. If its a good tracker you should get good downloads. AT work when I was downloading a show, yes I will watch 16 mintues of commercials, at work I usually set upload to unlimited and get upto 300 KB/s down. At home I usually have a reating of .270 berfore closing. But at work im nicer and let it goto 2 at least.

Nope, you can set your client to upload at 4K and still get 250K+ speeds. Yes, i've verified this.

Before you jump on me, Merc, i personally run a bt site and tracker and a 100 mbps seed 🙂.

Link?

I can explain since I know technically how it works. 🙂
You DL speed is dependent on 1: how fast other can upload to you, 2: if your upload isn't saturated, not used up. so capping is a good thing since putting it on unlimited will pretty much slow you dl to a crawl if all your upload is utilized. Its good to upload but not really neccessarily if there are T1 or Faster user, who can do it much faster then you alone by at least 10 times. so let them do the uploading, most of us are better off being a leecher and should not have to sit there and be a milker for others to leech, its too slow anyway.
Capping our upload to begin with is a serious handicap/hindrance to our download speed. their intention is to make it hard to share files with others and does just that, and worse because to download at full speed say 1.5mbit, at least 128k is used up. so someone with only 128k upload can spare nothing! doing so, slow their DL to at least half and thats a horrible tradeoff.

my down is 200
my up is 20

i think i varies based on how may people have the file, how many people wan the file, and bandwidth limitations based on connection.

ps: getting R*dH*t 9 now!

Hmm.. I thought I was the only one experiencing slow d/l lately. Who's using the experimental client and the official client?

Heh, I'm not dumb enough to REALLY use BT at work... I used it for the Halo2 download only... which took all of about 20 minutes... then shut it down. Call me a leecher.
