berkeley (attended as undergrad) and ucla are big (meaning undergrad classes are really big). i received my graduate degree from Davis. the Davis campus is the kind of place where you see some people (on campus) trying to get a horse into a trailer when you first drive there. spending a day touring each campus to see which one feels most congruent with your values might be a really good idea.

If you're doing engineering- DEFINITELY go Berkeley, and as mentioned- make sure you declare. It's near impossible to get into engineering if you come under a different major.

If you're doing any other major- DEFINITELY go Berkeley. :) <yes, I'm going to Berkeley>. Honestly, I don't know much about our other programs. Business is really good here. Don't do mass comm. (=

I'd say Berk

I applied EECS at Berkely

I applied CS at UCLA, i heard at the engineering open house all they talked about was how they are better than Berkely Engineering

ok i lied. i have school pride. Though we have a lot of good professors in Compsci , our engineering department is hopelessly outdated compared to the other UCs. we still have to turn in projects in hardcopy with floppies (its the only reason i still have a floppy drive). Our labs consist of pentium 133s and pentium pro 200s. I dont get why the small schools have the nice labs. I heard UCSC has all brand new like p3s in their labs, and a faster internet connection. And they suck at engineering. So on the resources side UCLA sucks for engineering, though some of the professors are pretty good, and some of them founded computer science as a field of study.

If you want to major in english or history or basically something that doesnt pay very well or require very much logic (which is why the articles in the school paper written by people in these majors are so mindless) i hear that the labs in the english department are state of the art, and their classrooms are fully wired, unlike ours.

LOL! Please don't assume things you don't know. Davis used to be part of UC Berkeley and seperated in 1974 and became its own school. The reason Davis is "in the middle of nowhere" is because it was founded on the basis of the study of agriculture and such...

UCI & UCD really are in the middle of nowhere.....UCLA, UC Berklely, and UCSD are not.

Easy peasy =)

I would never want to go to Berkeley or Davis. They're just extentions of my high school. I went to Lowell HS and about 1/3 of the graduating class goes to Berkeley and another 1/3 go to Davis. Life never changes for any of these people. They already have established Berkeley clics right from the start so they rarely meet any new people. I still keep in touch w/ a good number of my Berkeley / Davis friends and they're still more or less the same people from when they went to Lowell.

UCD! We have cows, lots of cows.

As far as engineering goes it's a pretty good undergrad program. Yes, it's in the middle of nowhere. But it's only a 20 minute drive to Sacramento, 20 minute drive to Cache Creek, an hour drive to SF, and two hour drive to Tahoe. Car is a must in Davis. But at least rent is cheaper than other UC (ask Berkeley peeps what $800 a month can get you). And there is parking.

Plus UCD has cows. How can you go wrong with cows?

haha, i've been observing this thread for a while.

school pride baby... RIVERSIDE! hahaha, sorry, couldn't keep a straight face. :)
our internet connection is better than ucla's, that's all i need to say. :p might be the only thing i can say... haha, oh well.

on a serious note though, riverside will become a much more prominant UC in the coming years.

casting my pity vote for ucr,
dc :)

despite all the claims that UCLA is harder to get into than UCB, UCB is undoubtedly the toughest to get in of all the UC's.

UCB has a better academic reputation than UCLA does, although as many mentioned it depends on your major. I'm majoring in Philosophy and UCLA's Philosophy department is one of the best in the country. Premed at UCLA is also very well regarded, and it just so happens I'm a premed also hehehe. Other than that, UCB is better at almost everything, but not by much. It's mostly reputation, and we all know how empty reputations can be. In any school you will get quality professors, it's just a matter of how your employer/grad school/prof. school will be disposed to value your resume.

On the other hand, UCB is a dump. They have a lot of trees everywhere, but I think it's to cover up all the garbage, and so that people can hide and light a spliff on campus. Right outside campus you have a lot of crazy people and drug dealers and the people in campus are pretty crazy themselves. It will be cloudy a lot of the time too, which can get kinda depressing.

UCLA is right next to Bel Air, in the city of Westwood. People are pretty much normal, if not TOO normal. But the cliches are true... you will see everyone on a cell phone with sunglasses and sandals. If had to choose I would pick UCLA in a heartbeat. I haven't always felt that way but the longer I'm here the more I'm glad I chose UCLA.

I don't know much about UCSD but I hear they have an awesome Bio and Marine Bio department.

If you like to party like crazy then UCSB is the best choice.

If you like cows then Davis or Riverside will suit you well.

hmm, way to generalize the campus...Berkeley has some of the coolest people i've ever met and no i have never met a crazy college student there, they're all pretty normal, just like most other universities you go to
And no, Riverside has ZERO cows
- just wanted to point that out to you

All schools have their benefits. Even some of the smaller schools like UC Santa Cruz or UC Riverside. Example, Riverside is the only school that has a bio-med program that leads specifically to UCLA med school. Besides UCLA obviously. And Santa Cruz has one of the better liberal arts programs of the UC's.

Research in your specific major is probably more important than what others define as "best".
