Which would you recommend to friends/family ?

I figured with all the "which SSD" threads, a poll would be nice.

I voted Samsung. Top notch reliability whilst still holding their own against the m4 and Vertex 3. Intel has an excellent controller for a 3Gbps system but to say they're late to the 6Gbps party would be an understatement.

Still voting "it doesn't matter, buy on price" because its closest to the real answer which is "it depends on your exact needs as they all have pluses and minuses"

If I vote for who my expectations are the highest, I guess Samsung. They are perfectly positioned with a ton of resources. I'm impressed by any tech company with complete in-house solutions.

I just wish we were talking about an American company such as Intel, who have disappointedly not anticipated and timed the SSD market and/or accurately envisioned their overall role in it.

Otherwise, I might just be more prone to choose the last option "It doesn't matter, buy on price, depends, all equal, etc." ... that is, as long as the manufacturer remains true to their rated and advertised specs. I will never trust any company caught making false promises or lying about what's underneath the hood.

I think you should blatantly overemphasis this. Most will vote on best performance. I nearly missed this qualification myself.

Previous Kingston SSDs were unbeatable for friends and family. Most notable was the V100+. There was no babysitting required and often can be bought for $1 per GIG. Even the newest v200 at 128GB was available for $100 within weeks of introduction. Too bad, it currently has issues... I hope they get it's problems worked out soon.

Tie between Marvell and Samsung. I'm running a Vertex 3 120GB, but only because I got it for $150 and most issues have been solved now. Running the latest firmware it's been fine for ~1 month, but earlier firmwares were for the most part absolute crap. OCZ really needs to stop using early adopters as Beta testers, which is why I'd only buy their SSDs 6+ months after the drives are released.

I'm watching this as I have never used an SSD myself (too expensive previously) and now I may be putting one in a friend's PC. I know some have had issues, others are good, but I don't know which is what anymore.

I voted Intel. It may not have high sequentials, but random-access is great. The fact that it is not a 6Gbit/sec interface doesn't change that. I know of no SSD that has random scores that exceed a 3Gbit/sec interface.

Edit: Then again, I bought OCZ Agility SSDs, primarily based on price. I just didn't think I could afford Intel. (Although now they are around $1/GB AR. Before they were $2/GB.)

Hi,

I answered Marvell as right now I feel the Corsair Performace Pro 128GB offers the best performance/price package. However, I predict that before the end of the year we may see the latest Indilinx/Everest controller emerge as the controller that provides the basis for the best price/performance package. The new OCZ Octane is proving to be very stable and widely compatible; I look forward to advances in the firmware and the release of the 'Hi-Octane' versions.

I have gone through 15 SSDs since they have come out. The only SSD that has remained a constant in my machine for its reliability is my Intel based drives. Although for speed, my Crucial drives have been just as reliable. I am currently using the M4 now but I had several C300s and even an M225 at one point. I'll agree that Intel is a little late to the game in terms of speed though.
