I'd have to say Half Life just because it's 5 years old and it's still one of the most popular games being played online. Not many other games can say that ;) If I could only play one FPS for the rest of my life it would be Half Life because it doesn't lose its replay value (for me anyway). Countless mods played by countless people across the world make it just that much better :)

Definitely Quake 1 for me. I spent more time with that game on quakeworld (and netquake before QW) than any other game I've ever played, at least 5 times more than any other game.

Although I didn't really beat HL until 2000 or so, I have to admit that it game me hours upon hours of exciting game play. I can't wait for HL2. :)

I think the OP should have specified exactly what s/he meant by "Best" FPS ever. "Best" can mean most popular, most groundbreaking, most fun, most amount of time spent on, most engrossing single-player experience, etc.

HL/CS probably is the most popular game ever, but Doom really started the FPS genre with its shareware model and Internet distribution. Of course, without Wolfenstein, none of the others would have ever existed.

For sheer amount of time spent on a game, I'd have to vote for Doom or Quake 2 (and their mods). I voted for Doom.

Call of Duty is probably the most immersive single-player FPS experience I've had, except for maybe MOHAA.

Duke was just plain FUN. :D

Clive Barker's Undying gets my vote as the most "I wet my pants 'cuz the games so darn creepy" FPS.:Q

I'm holding my vote until BF1942 gets up there. Most realistic, and tons of mods so it suits anyones taste. CS is awesome too, but I prefer BF1942 over it. I never liked the Doom/Quake/Unreal series, they're unrealistic and boring.

Quake boring? I don't know how you can think that. If you have the spare bandwidth, download
this movie - I guarantee it will utterly and completely change your mind :p

I don't mind a spot of BF1942 on a lan with friends, but on its merits as a game, I think it falls far behind.

Cool video...still think its a boring game :p

I went with Doom. Considering the game is older than many of the posters here, I doubt too many remember when it came out. I found myself trying to look around the monitor when coming up to turn a corner. A close second is HL, with Quake and System Shock getting honorable mention.

As has been said, best is hard to define. Currently, I enjoy Call of Duty most.

Counterstrike > Halo > Half-Life, for me. Half-Life by itself is a really good FPS, but not the best. Counter-Strike made it fun because of the whole multiplayer element. Halo is a better FPS than HL without mods.

yes you install a mod for half-life, the mod is free.

or you can buy a stand alone version of it too. it's basically half-life + cs - original single player

BF, if it was there. Yes, it wasn't massively groundbreaking, but that wasn't the poll question, was it? Back in the days when I first saw team DM, I though, gee, Wouldn't it be infinitely cooler if we had driveable vehicles, which could use teamwork (i.e. firing from the truck/plane) and air assaults could be coordinated with infantry charges below. Maybe it didn't do anything that had never been done before. But it damn sure put everything I had ever wanted in an FPS before together and it did it in an extremely fun way. It is everything that tribes 2 wanted to be, it has the great things about TFC, it has the realistic weapons of CS, and it has a flavor all its own.

Actually, if i could, i would.
For me, GoldenEye was fps heaven. There was nothing wrong with it.

Except the enourmous amounts of lag in multiplayer.... :) Don't get me wrong. I LOVED GoldenEye and it was my introduction to first person shooters. Heck, I didn't even notice the lag until I got used to playing PC games, but even without the lag it is not the best FPS ever. Best console FPS? Quite possibly...

Anyway, I used to think what you think about Goldeneye until I learned how to play FPS's with a mouse and keyboard. To me, control and control options are a big part of a game's quality. No controller will ever be able to match the precision and response time of a mouse and keyboard, so a console game would have to be flabbergastingly good to get my vote for best FPS. As it stands, no FPS is/was as good as Half-Life, in my opinion.

Best FPS ever? I'd say BF1942. I've never enjoyed another FPS as much as it.

EDIT: If BF1942 didn't make the list because it wasn't "groundbreaking" enough, how come Call of Duty is up there?

Doom (& doom II) win for the best immersion factor. As well as being the first games I played over a network. Really made you lean to see round the monitor, and shiver at the sounds :D

Honourable mentions to Thief and Terra Nova, for sheer playability, as well as for being so ahead of the curve. Looking glass are sadly missed .

Unreal Tournament > Half Life > CoD > others.

UT was groundbreaking, first multiplayer FPS really (specifically designed, AFAIK), then came Q3A, then UT2k3 etc.

Were war games like Medal of Honour even popular?
MOHAA was considered the best fps out till CoD came out.
Q3 was`nt as ground breaking as Q1. Neither was Q2. Q3 is just a DM game like UT.
DX isnt technically a fps is it?

Cos BF1942 is the Q3/UT of war games.
CoD is up there cos its a phenominal game. Amazing atmosphere. Amazing sound. Feels like your there.
