##POLL## Best FPS Ever?

Which was the first one that required (or at least utilized 3D hardware acceleration?) Was that Quake? Just curious. I know it wasn't the original Wolfenstein or Doom.

Max Payne or BF1942 with DC. BF1942 games make room for different styles of play. I've easily played BF1942+DC more than I have any other FPS, so it's an easy choise as the best FPS ever.

How about the original Tribes? To me there's never been a team based multiplayer game that touches it. It actually took a plan and good teamwork to win a match against another good team. I remember playing hours at a time with the old clan (*IDK*).

As far as groundbreaking I'd have to say either Wolf-3D or Doom1. Wolf started FPS'ers and Doom put them on the map.

I don't care if the game is beautifully done. It has to be enjoyable.
As a result, my vote goes to BF1942. I have never had so much fun with a game before.

Duke Nukem 3D Added.
Why?
Cos it added a few things to fps that wasnt done before.
Such as inworld objects that were interactive. Decoys (HoloDuke!), and a MP communication system.

How about Soldier of Fortune? Mostly mindless killing with much cool gore. I guess Halo was better, though different. Half-Life? Meh, it was good, but I played SOF three times, Halo twice, and HL once.

great 1st player, lots of game following (TFC, DoD, CS), killer graphics (at the time), awesome multiplayer, so on and so forth...

I'm sorry, but I can't believe you'd include games like Medal of Honour without having the likes Quake III and Deus Ex on your list. Quake III in particular was groundbreaking, and remains my definition of a "perfect" game even today. Deus Ex was just really, really good 😛

Were war games like Medal of Honour even popular?

Absolutely positively without a doubt the answer to your question is the original Quake.

Call me a n00b... how does one play the famed Counter Strike ? Must I install a mod after installing Half-Life ? I've always wondered about the hype.

Anyway, I voted Unreal (UT I presume)... I still play that game these days... anything that still keeps my interest and so many players through these years is a keeper.

I'm holding my vote until BF1942 gets up there. Most realistic, and tons of mods so it suits anyones taste. CS is awesome too, but I prefer BF1942 over it. I never liked the Doom/Quake/Unreal series, they're unrealistic and boring.

I still say Descent, first FPS with 3d models, true 6 degrees of freedom movement, truly 3d, requires a lot of skill to play and master. Add it. NOW! 🙂

Halflife, Halo, and Goldeneye are my favorites. I'm not a huge fan of FPSes, so those might be a bit mainstream.

Where the heck is the System Shock series? Or even Deus Ex?

Those showed without doubt that RPG elements could not only be well integrated into an FPS, but that they'd give a game far more immersive and interesting that could be achieved by FPS alone. With the possible exception of Half Life, either of those series smoke the rest of the list in terms of story

Quake boring? I don't know how you can think that. If you have the spare bandwidth, download
this movie - I guarantee it will utterly and completely change your mind 😛

I don't mind a spot of BF1942 on a lan with friends, but on its merits as a game, I think it falls far behind.
