Gandalf did have narya when he fought the Balrog though. I think you would be hard pressed to definitively say that Gandalf was more powerful than Sauron. I think Sauron in Middle Earth was more powerful than Gandalf

<< Gandalf the Gray would get owned.... It should be Gandalf the White... >>

Yep, Gandalf the White would kill everyone else without a sweat..!!!

you're missing a few wizards:

Zedd from Sword of Truth
Quick Ben from Malazan Book of the Fallen
Anomander Rake from Malazan Book of the Fallen
Rand al'Thor for crying out loud!

Keep in mind when you vote that when Caramon saw the future, Raistlin Majere was ABLE to freaken destroy a damned Goddess in her own domain. You know who I voted for.

Likewise, Raistlin is bound by absolutely no moral or principles. On every level that I can think of Raistlin would wipe the mat with everybody else. Based on the powers the wizard displayed (or were implied to be able to wield), this isn't even an argument.

The Master of the Past and Present of course - Raistlin.
And he even gets extra points for having the coolest name too.

What a bunch of geeks.

Oh, and Zeddicus Zul Zorander would've smoked all those guys. He had a knack for political things.

Hmm...

No Q from StarTrek, Granted he isnt a wizard but he is all powerful isnt he???

Hmm...

How bout Trance Gemini?

Yoda is definitely not it.

We don't know who is more powerful, Gandalf the White (after rebirth and getting the Elvish ring) or Sauron with The One Ring Of Power on, or whether Gandalf would have been more powerful than Sauron if he ever put on the ring. Or maybe Galadriel with the ring would have been more powerful? We don't know, those are all theretical possibilities which never happened in their universes.
Albus Dumbledore is powerful, but he won't use his full abilities because of some moral code, so he won't stand a chance.
Tom Marvolo Riddle aka He Who Must Not Be Named aka You Know Who aka The Dark Lord aka SnakeFace aka Lord Voldemort 😉 is ok, but you can't really compare him with the most powerful wizard in Tolkien's realm because JRR and Joanne have a very different understanding of magic.
If Harry James Potter will curse Voldie's butt at the end of HP book7 (JKR is teasing saying he might die, but c'mon, he must win) he might be more powerful than Voldemort, so if comparing wizards at the peak of their power, it's either Sauron wearing the ring or Potter fully grown.
Tom Bombadil is a possibility too, but he is not a wizard.

Who is this Raistlin fellow you speak about? What book/movie?

The wizard of Oz? Bah.

Raistlin is from the DragonLance series.

He'll whoop em all! Common, the guy was gonna be the all powerfull god of the universe!! He took on the gods, jacked em up, but didn't do anything because his brother convinced him not to snuff out every single life there was. I mean, you guys are comparing Gandal with the guy that got his fingers chopped off. He actually had to go out there and blow people away. Raistlin would be sittin in a tower as armies cowered as they even approuched his fortress. Maybe like .0001 percent could get through his grove.

Gandalf is just winning the poll because more people have seen the movie.

Raistlin (or else some other AD&D wizard has to win).

Raistlin is like THE most powerful wizard though. He didn't just defeat Takhisis, he then defeated Paladine, and after that Gilean (Astinus).

If that doesn't mean anything to those of you that don't read Dragonlance, imagine it like this. Raistlin is like a Greek mortal that decides to challenge the gods of the Greek Pantheon. They fight and Raistline totally, completely, and utterly obliterates all of the competition. Also, keep in mind that Raistlin doesn't use any sort of special items or anything. The only magical item he possesses is the Staff of Magius, which he has never used for anything besides getting light in certain situations. There's no need for some puny rings or wands or staves, or <cough> sa'angreal. Raistlin does it all by himself, and THAT is true power.

<< RAISTLIN! >>

Totally he would rock all those other guys without even making a gesture 🙂

Also Paladine... and Eleminster

obviously this poll is tainted by the fact that LOTR was released just last week...

put it up again in 3 months, after LOTR craze and before EP2, then we'll see Yoda kick some arse

what about Gandalf the gray/white vs. Bruce Lee?
sure Gandalf can blow up great things, but bruce lee was so fast!!! 😕

Sauron isn't a Wizard in LOTR, not one of the Istari at least. and Morgoth could whip Sauron's butt. of course, Morgoth is an ainur (sp?).

Gandalf is definitley the most interesting Wizard. Rand al'Thor and Raistlin are pretty much immortal, but they simply aren't interesting because of it. no telling what Cirdan's ring would do for Gandalf, though. its not a weapon, but it does help him. anyone know when Gandalf is given the ring?

Michael Jordan?
How about this michael: Michael the Archangel from the book of Daniel.
He aint a wizard, but the name just sounds awesome!
