this thread is pointless - Obama wins this election in a landslide, why are we even bothering talking about Keyes? Ditka had a better chance.

I think Keyes is very well-spoken, and an intelligent guy - but you just can't throw a guy into an election and call him a legit candidate. The Right would be better off focusing their efforts elsewhere, this battle is lost.

I like Keyes a lot, but I have to agree with you here. Obama's been riding a huge hype bandwagon, especially with his speech at the DNC, and has all but won the election for all intents and purposes (I wish he would give us a better idea of his political platform though). For what it's worth, Keyes hasn't done so well in past Senate races, losing pretty handily in 1988 and 1992.

The last minute candidate thing has worked before (e.g. the somewhat sketchy Frank Lautenberg switch after Bob Torricelli finally dropped out of the NJ Senate race), but that only works in heavily partisan areas. Illinois' voting trends tend to be heavily partisan... towards Democrats, so again I don't see Keyes doing especially well in an actual election.

LOL as far as we know. If he does have skeletons you can bet the Republican Attack Machine will uncover them!

Well, considering that Jack Ryan had hired an "escort" to follow Obama around full-time this spring, with no negative results, I imagine he's pretty clean. I frankly thought that was a bizarre new low in campaign tactics, and God knows what such an escort would have seen if Obama had done the same thing to Ryan - he could have partially defrayed the cost by reselling the footage to Girls Gone Wild.

That's absurd (not questioning the veracity of the atricle, but the lengths to which the republicans go)! I can't say I'm really surprised though.

Trying to pin a black kid on Obama isn't going to work as well as it did with McCain.

I am trying to work through the thought process used to choose Keyes:

Oh, oh the Democrats have Obama running for senate!

What should we do???!!

I know lets run Alan Keyes against him! He's black and agrees with us!

But will Illinois vote for Keyes?

Of course they will! If they are willing to vote for Obama they will vote for another Afro-American.
They all look the same.

Here in Illinois we aren't very familiar with him. He didn't get much coverage until after the DNC because of the Jack Ryan scandal.

God does not exist--so Keys is guided by a made-up world of pure lies, myth and fantasy.
Quite likely Obama is equally misguided, as is dubya, and so many others.

From what I hear, Illinois politics is extremely corrupt (from both the left and right sides). I think Obama is a breath of fresh air that many people might be looking for. There is really no limit to what this guy can achieve, and I predict big things for him. He'ls literally a saint, completely clean slate.

Before Ryan left the race, he had photographers and camera men following Obama to find something to dig up on him.

EDIT: Didn't see DonVito's post.

The absence of any evidence to support the existence of God is what I'm basing my statement on.

If you have any evidence (not ven proof--just evidence) to support the existence of God, please let us know.

I did and don't mean to offend anyone--but there is no easy way to put it.

The hard reality is that there is no credible evidence to support the existance of God.

Being from Illinois (but not living there now), I can tell you that Keyes has no chance in hell in winning. How Obama will win is the same way that Carol Mosley Braun won. There is a large contingent of surburban affluent college-educated women that absolutely will recoil at Keyes' message. Also, there are a lot of independent downstate voters that are more in the center, than to the far-right like Keyes is, and will vote for Obama.

I really think the Republicans should just not contest the seat, and pack it in. Anybody who comes in at this point just dosen't look legitimate, and will end up spending money just to lose.

Obama should have a good chance of winning.

i believe most counties, except for cook, are for bush. cook county is chicago for those who dont know. if chicago was in another state, illinois would be for bush.\

Chicago would be where culture is happening and the effects would radiate out from there. Diversity is like nuclear fusion and the resultant light of stars. Mental evolution takes place as a result of stimulation and cross fertilization.

Not only does he have the right ideas, he can articulate them.

What an absolute pity you can't hold the same qualifications to our president! Typical.

If the Republicans know what's best (which I doubt), they'll concede the Illinois Senate election to Obama and focus on their efforts where their chances of winning are actually greater than a snowball's chance in hell. Keyes, Ditka, whatever. The only chance the Republicans have of pulling this one off would involve some sort of resurrection of the Lord Ronald Reagan.

Possibly. In the 2000 election, Bush won 78 Illinois counties to Gore's 24.

In Cook County, Gore won by 746,000 votes, winning the state by 569,600 votes overall. If you negate Cook County then, Bush only wins by about 176,000 votes, so it would still be pretty close. Illinois is definitely considered a swing state.
