Anyone else ever notice that losing weight COSTS money?
Not necessarily.
Eat better; I get good food CHEAPER from Trader Joe's than regular food at the supermarket.
Running costs no money.
There are tons of exercises you can do without equipment.
And willpower is completely free.
Ah, willpower. That is the crux of the problem. A diet is a mind game you play with yourself. Four distinct times in my adult life I lost weight/got in better shape.
1) Just before I got married (when I was 19) my future mother-in-law was my main source of food, and she always made healthy meals. I was working that summer doing physical work, and heck, I was 19. I got down to a pretty decent weight, although I was still above the ideal weight/height chart.
2) Back in my college days, a new couple moved into married student housing and he was into fitness. I started going to the gym to lift weights and play racquetball (badly) with him and some other friends. Eventually we graduated, and that ended that.
3) Mid nineties: separated from my wife and moved in with a cousin and had very little money and basically skipped a lot of meals. Things got better.
4) Later nineties: I was thinking of going into law enforcement. I joined a gym and got myself down to where I was 20lbs or so overweight. Changed my mind, gave up the gym because it was expensive.
I know this is boring as hell, but I wanted to write it down as a way to think about it. You know, start the mind game. So anyway, it's been about 5 years since I had an external force/ or *specific* goal motivating me to lose weight or get into better shape. I think I know what my next specific goal will be. About 6 months ago, I joined the Hazardous Materials Response Team. It is a volunteer emergency response organization. We have a lot of equipment and it can involve a lot of physical exertion. So my mind game is this: I don't want to be the anchor that slows down the team. I don't want to be the guy that takes notes and cleans up around the shop and makes coffee for the other guys that do stuff.
Anyway, I'm rambling.
