Gotta wonder why your god would want you to ever starve. Let me know when it starts raining manna.

Fasting != starving.

....
yes it does

you're starving yourself for 24 hours. The religious rules state no food or water. Thus, you are consuming absolutely nothing. Thus, you are starving yourself, forcing your body to consume itself for a day. Well, since it's just a day you'll likely be consuming stored calories (fat), because nobody has zero fat. Go for longer and it'll turn into consuming muscle and whatnot.

I digress.
Yes, you are starving yourself. Even if only a day, the definition remains the same.

The most ridiculous of traditions is the whole fasting thing in all the religions.

Sorry, I like giving my body what it needs on a daily basis.
Some book and people with robes aren't going to convince me otherwise.

fasting is a means to make a sacrifice. I don't find that ridiculous. we all should try to go without every now and then, and maybe we'd appreciate more what we have.

Then how about they sacrifice some of their time and money and try and help people less fortunate instead of sitting at home all day?

They may be doing that already. People who give without you knowing are top of the list to me. It's the people who brag about it that I don't pay much attention to.

I agree, but that has nothing to do with what I asked. Fasting in your home for a day does nothing. Why would they waste time doing nothing when they could be doing for others?

what do you do for others?

Sure am. You seem to be concerned with what others are doing so I wondered what you've done lately.

I'm debating the relevance of fasting. I don't see how your question is relevant.

I see you don't want to answer my question.

Because my response will only trigger more douchebaggery from your keyboard.

Oh yeah? Because the world wouldn't be a fucking mess if nobody worried about others, right?

Destroker, you are atheist so there is no God to offer your 'sacrifice' to. You are trying to rationalize with some exaggeration that to not eat for one day is "starving".

Are all diets "starvation" diets? No. Some fasting allows the consumption of liquids, some do not. No demonination will tell you put your life at risk at any point and skip the consumption of water with your daily medication if you rely on it to live. You are therefore exaggerating or trying to rationalize this to yourself to fit your definition. Again, not all fasting is the same. Yes, some muslims will not even swallow their own spit to avoid drinking in their definition of fasting, but the bottom line is we should adhere to the call of fasting to the best of our individual abilities in observance of the occassion that would allow us to abstain from all forms of sin. This act of self denial strenghtens our will to avoid sin and tempation. And trust me, I eat pretty well, so this is not easy even for a day. But the next day its time to feast! :)

yes I exaggerated a little bit, but I was also making a simple point. Not eating is equal to starving. Yes it may have a purpose, and yes it may be a short lived period, but I was arguing semantics basically, pure definition. When you put meaning to something it's going to be different.

And don't worry, I understand the meaning behind the tradition/ceremony. I have family and friends that follow the Catholic traditions.

I just get disgusted with organized religion. I ultimately respect the individual for their faith, I mean for some it's an insane world and a nearly impossible challenge to keep on trucking without having faith. Hell, I'll admit I'll struggle sometimes to get through things when I constantly talk about the lack of purpose and meaning to life, and I seriously need to get over that and stop thinking about it. :p

However, and I'm trying to not be offensive when I say this, I think creating some tradition to enforce abstinence from temptation is taking things too far. I can't really explain my logic behind that without writing a book, as it involves far too many distinct topics that come together in the end to form a single message, a message that alone many will brush aside as worthless text, let alone the many things that message represents. Ultimately everyone has their own take on life based on their experiences, and with many things like religion so firmly grounded in humanity at this point, trying to explain religion away might end up being nothing than a terrible version of a lengthy filibuster.

No, purposefully not eating is not very smart. And while I understand that you're not "starving" yourself, I need to feed my body all day long.

Yep, exactly why it would kind of ruin it to post if you are fasting, unless you are seeking only accolade from others.

Christ denounced hypocritical religion, and much of the world hated Him and His teachings for it (many still do).

It always makes me  to hear people insult religion like every belief or belief system is the same.
It's as bad as saying politics in its entirety is stupid.

Don't get me wrong, many/most things in politics and religion are false or misused, but you really can't do away with either.
Both, in their pure forms, are necessary because they are about leadership and fundamental truths, respectively.
You can claim to get rid of politics by name, but you can't really get rid of it - even in anarchy, and with as little as 2 individuals (or 1 if you have multiple personalities :p) politics develops out of necessity. The same applies to religion; something will always inevitably rise to fill in your fundamental beliefs, even if it's not called "religion". Someone/something will always play the part of supreme authority in a person's life.

so how many fall seriously ill from not eating or drinking for 24 hours? or do they just basically sleep all day. or veg out and do absolutely nothing.
