I guess the cat is out of the bag in the thread, so:

Yom Kippur.

Some people fast for other reasons then religion (diet, focus, etc). I'm not a fan as I feel it degrades me athletically for the period of time that I'm doing it not to mention the knee jerk response I imagine my metabolism doing.

yes it does

you're starving yourself for 24 hours. The religious rules state no food or water. Thus, you are consuming absolutely nothing. Thus, you are starving yourself, forcing your body to consume itself for a day. Well, since it's just a day you'll likely be consuming stored calories (fat), because nobody has zero fat. Go for longer and it'll turn into consuming muscle and whatnot.

I digress.
Yes, you are starving yourself. Even if only a day, the definition remains the same.

The most ridiculous of traditions is the whole fasting thing in all the religions.

Sorry, I like giving my body what it needs on a daily basis.
Some book and people with robes aren't going to convince me otherwise.

No. I don't believe in such nonsense.

I could post some pictures of some people where it certainly would make sense.

sure, fatties should be starved. But that's not the same as ridiculous ceremonial fasts.
Because in the case of the former, it actually makes sense.

And fasting for things like medical tests is the other case where it makes sense. Also, it's a necessity, so it makes sense doubly so. :p

Destroker, you are atheist so there is no God to offer your 'sacrifice' to. You are trying to rationalize with some exaggeration that to not eat for one day is "starving".

Are all diets "starvation" diets? No. Some fasting allows the consumption of liquids, some do not. No demonination will tell you put your life at risk at any point and skip the consumption of water with your daily medication if you rely on it to live. You are therefore exaggerating or trying to rationalize this to yourself to fit your definition. Again, not all fasting is the same. Yes, some muslims will not even swallow their own spit to avoid drinking in their definition of fasting, but the bottom line is we should adhere to the call of fasting to the best of our individual abilities in observance of the occassion that would allow us to abstain from all forms of sin. This act of self denial strenghtens our will to avoid sin and tempation. And trust me, I eat pretty well, so this is not easy even for a day. But the next day its time to feast! :)

Are these actually the 24 hr restrictions of Yom Kippur?

Restrictions
# Eat or drink (including water).
# Wash.
# Wear makeup or deodorant.
# Wear leather shoes.
# Have sex.

fasting is a means to make a sacrifice. I don't find that ridiculous. we all should try to go without every now and then, and maybe we'd appreciate more what we have.

Then how about they sacrifice some of their time and money and try and help people less fortunate instead of sitting at home all day?

They may be doing that already. People who give without you knowing are top of the list to me. It's the people who brag about it that I don't pay much attention to.

I agree, but that has nothing to do with what I asked. Fasting in your home for a day does nothing. Why would they waste time doing nothing when they could be doing for others?
