POLL: age and dangerous drivers

Young from what I've seen of my peers (I'm 17 years old). Today I saw some 16-year-old who just got his license and a new Honda Civic swerving in and out of traffic and switching lanes as fast and sharp as possible. He came within a few inches of one car. Then again, I've seen some pretty scary old people.

EDIT: Also, my best friend from Las Vegas (I moved to Utah about 4 years ago) was killed in a car accident a few days after getting his license and a brand new car. It was his fault.

a study was done. younger drivers get into more accidents total, but older drivers (65+) get into more accidents PER MILE DRIVEN than any other age group.

Young driver grows out of it. (We all start off as as one.)

Old driver simply sucks and will continue to do so. Time only makes it worse.

From personal experience I'd say older. I've never had problems with younger drivers, but have had two or three close calls with the elderly who don't know the rules and/or cannot see beyond the steering wheel.

young people make accidents out of unusual driving conditions or where quick decisions are needed (swirving, rainy, someone cuts you off, etc.) old people make accidents out of everyday driving(4way stop, stoplight, parking, basic traffic laws)

It's the ones that don't grow out of it and don't find legal and safe outlets that worry me nearly as much as the decrepit. Kids tend to drive more nowadays too.

Normal people are always under the impression that I street race or am a ricer because I mod my car. Then they see my car (looks bone stock) and I give them an earful about how I don't like endangering people's lives and I prefer improving my actual driving skill in a legal forum.

Hmmm.. I went into a drift/fishtail today and recovered fine. What would an old person have done? Would a 70 year old have fishtailed in the first place?

IMO it's the parent's fault for buying new cars for kids. give them a POS to drive to limit their ability to drive aggressive.

i actually haven't encountered that many bad old drivers myself, but some people just lose their ability to drive and should have their licences taken away.

no crap, if you are not going OVER the speedlimit and FASTER than the lother lanes, then get the hell out of the left most lane!

I got a minivan, myself. 😀

an uneducated driver is the dangerous one. a young driver who is never thought how to drive properly won't magically learn just because he reaches a certain age. there are exceptions, people who know how to drive very well and still choose to drive dangerously. i don't think it has anything to do with age.

when im getting off the freeway, i get in the slow lane somewhat in advance...i can stand the old people going the speed limit(65mph here) but then you get these retards going like 50 to 55.

An older person is more likely to be involved in a "fender-bender" type of small accident, whereas a young driver is more likely to ball-up a car in a firey wreck. As upset as I get sometimes with an old person pacing a semi and blocking the fast lane, I'll take that any day over the young morons who tailgate and weave in and out of traffic and who don't know the rules of the road.

Rules that young drivers should know:
The left lane IS NOT A FAST LANE! It's a PASSING LANE. Unless you are actively passing a car, move the fvck to the right.
If someone behind you flashes their headlights, it means they want you to move over so that they can pass. It does NOT mean that they want you to give them the finger.
If I'm already following another car, tailgaiting me will not make me speed up.
Cars are now equipped with an amazing device which allows other drivers to know what you plan to do in the immediate future; it's called a turn signal.
When entering the passing lane to go around a semi, do not swerve suddenly into the lane to get in front of a line of cars only to take 5 minutes to pass the semi.

That's all I can think of right now.

Basically, older drivers are at least trying. Young drivers are simply stupid.

I'd say it's the parent's fault for raising stupid kids. From the teenagers I know, crappy car, nice car, it doesn't matter. Many of them have no fvcking common sense at all. And I get to be lumped in with them, that's what pisses me off. I get to pay higher premiums because a lot of people my age think this is NASCAR or WRC or something.

Now I'm not saying young age is what makes drivers dangerous, but you have to admit, the facts are not on our side. Well, in a couple more years I won't be lumped into that age group any more, but just remembering the scene in my High School parking lot back when I went there just amazes me.
